One of the big movie thrillers so far this year is Zodiac starring Mark Ruffalo, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Robert Downey, Jr. The movie was produced by Paramount Pictures.
Zodiac is based on true life accounts from the book of the same name by Robert Graysmith. Graysmith was a political cartoonist working for the San Francisco Chronicle during the reign of the Zodiac killer. If the trailer is any indication of the frightening nature of this film, you will be riveted to your seat for the entire 158 minute film.
The film shows how encounters with the Zodiac killer during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s affected the lives of the men who were assigned to pursue him. Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain) plays the cartoonist Robert Graysmith. Mark Ruffalo stars as Detective Dave Toschi, who was the man in charge of the investigation into the murders. His partner Bill Armstrong is portrayed by Anthony Edwards (ER). Robert Downey, Jr. is a journalist named Paul Avery who is assigned the story of the Zodiac killer.
The press got involved after three murders had already been committed by this unknown killer. An anonymous letter written by someone claiming responsibility for the unsolved murders arrived at the San Francisco Chronicle on August 1, 1969. The killer demanded that it be published on the front page of the paper. The letter also included a cryptogram that was later deciphered. A second letter sent to the San Francisco Examiner named the killer, the Zodiac.
Hundreds of leads flooded the SFPD. Graysmith (Gyllenhaal) volunteers to do what he can even at the risk of his family to catch the Zodiac. The police get a description of a man seen by a couple of teenagers before the murder of Zodiac victim Paul Stine. Even with a composite sketch to go on, the killer remained at large, taunting the police with more letters. The murders remain unsolved.
According to critics, the movie is not director David Fincher’s best work but it does deliver the suspense that the average person goes to the movies to see. It also helps that the film is based on a real crime. They all agree that the movie is meticulously researched to be accurate down to the letter. People will get a sense of what it was like to live in fear of an unknown serial killer.
If you are fascinated by crime thrillers, give this film a look see. I personally would read the book first. They always give you a better feel for the personality of the characters. And, books put in details that movies just don’t have time to show. Besides, books are cheaper.
