hen the weather gets warm, throw a party for your friends. A wine tasting party is the perfect idea for a Friday or Saturday evening. Here are a few tips to make your party a big success.

Wine tasting parties are not anything new. A themed wine tasting party will give your potential guests an idea of the wines that you will be serving. You can host an American vineyard party, an Italian wine party, or a party whose theme focuses on a particular decade of wine-making.

Because the main focus of the party is the wine sampling, serving light hors d’oeuvres will not fill the bellies of your guests too full. Choosing cheeses or light dishes that would complement the different assortment of wines will please the palates of your guests. If you do want a more substantial meal, try heavy appetizers instead of a full course meal.

There are three types of wine to sample: red, white, or sparkling. You may concentrate on one of the three or any combination of wines. When you set up the wine tasting table, start with the lighter wines and move to the fuller bodied ones. Lighter does not pertain to the color, but the taste and aroma. Serve the white wines chilled and the red wines at room temperature.

Serve the white and red wines in different types of glasses. Red wines use wider shaped wine glasses, while white wines use less curved glasses. Only a couple of ounces of wine are needed in each glass for the tasting.

Give each guest a score card to evaluate the wines to be tasted. The guests are judging the color, smell, and taste of the selections. To view the color, the glass is held up to the light. To evaluate the smell, the glass of wine is swirled in the glass to release the bouquet. The taste of wine is as varied as the smell. To taste the wine, it is not readily swallowed but swirled in the mouth to get a thorough impression of the flavor.

Make sure to designate someone as the safe driver for the evening ahead of time. This person may sample the wine, but they will either spit after every wine or not drink anything beyond the few ounces to taste. This allows those who want to drink to enjoy themselves without worry as to how they will get home.

Wine tasting parties are popular. It is a good way to get to meet new neighbors or just to spend a warm evening with friends. If you know of a few friends that are really wine connoisseurs, invite them over and have a good time.
