Learning is how we respond to environmental, social, emotional, and physical stimuli in understanding new information. Children process information differently. You will soon find out what your child’s learning style is.
Here are the 3 main learning styles and some of their traits:
1. Visual learning style – These children learn best through seeing. In their mind, they are like a movie camera processing every word and everything they see on the movie screen.
- Usually a good speller
- Memorizes by strong visual associations
- Functions best with overall view before proceeding
- May have trouble recalling verbal instructions unless written down
2. Auditory learning style – These children learn best through hearing. In their mind, they are like a tape recorder.
- Likes to listen to lectures, music, and others talking
- Is a good storyteller
- Easily distracted by outside noises like two people talking at once
- Likes jokes better than comics
3. Kinesthetic learning style – These children learn best by doing and through movement. In their mind, they need to feel what they see and hear.
- Usually good in athletics
- Touches others to get their attention
- Makes gestures a lot
- Speaks with action words
I am a combination visual and kinesthetic learner. Your child may have more than one learning style. We have children that have different learning styles so using one textbook for one child does not work for another child with a different learning style.
Do you know what your child’s learning style is? What is your learning style?

This is a great basic explanation of learning styles. Part of the beauty of homeschooling is that we have the flexibility to teach according to the individual learning style of each child. I Am a combination learner with an emphasis on auditory learning. My daughter is very kinesthetic. My husband is very visual and my son is a strong combination of visual and auditory. We are all individuals.

My son is both a visual and auditory learner. I guess you could say he takes after me. I really like this explanation of the learning styles.
