Vacation Rentals: An Alternative to Hotels

Vacation Villa

Vacation Villa - Holiday by Disney

Holidays are just around the corner and if you’re traveling, hotels can get expensive during the peak times.

Since we have a family of nine, we automatically have to get two rooms.  When we traveled to Florida to accompany my husband on a business trip, his hotel room was $200 per night and that was with a discount!  That didn’t even include food and we were going to be there for a week, too.

I started searching for other hotels in the area but they were just as much, if not more.  Someone told me to look into the vacation rentals in the area.  I looked online and was surprised to see that there were a lot of vacation rentals in the area with very reasonable prices.

We ended up renting a villa for $100 per night.  This is what we rented:

  • 4 bedrooms with 2 master suites
  • 3 full bathrooms
  • Full kitchen
  • Full size washer and dryer
  • 4 TVs with one of them being a LCD HDTV and cable TV with 200 channels
  • Wireless internet with a combination fax/scanner/copier
  • Playpen, high chair and stroller (great idea for families!)
  • The garage was converted to a game room with a pool table, foosball table, an air hockey table, and a dart board
  • One of the kids’ bedrooms was equipped with an Xbox and computer games
  • The villa was 10 minutes away from the main gates of Disney world
  • The best part was the villa had a swimming pool in the backyard!

You can understand why our children did not want to leave the place to check out Florida!

We saved a lot of money on food by buying our food at the grocery store and cooking our meals at the villa.

Vacation Rentals by Owner is where I found this villa and if you’re interested in the villa we stayed at, their website is Holiday By Disney.  The owners were very friendly and pleasant to talk to.

Smaller cities won’t have as many choices but you can see how much money you save by not staying at the hotels.

Have you rented a vacation rental before?

This is a good idea Mimi. We actually have done this before and it was also in Florida. The house was fixed up in Disney decor and it was really very pleasant. There was a swimming pool and a back yard for my guide dog to have some room to run as well. There were even some toys for the kids to play with and there were movies and books on the shelf in the living room. It was much more comfortable than staying in a hotel for several days.

VRBO.com is awesome! I didn't actually find my lake house there, I found it on Craigslist – but they used Craigslast to point to their VRBO listing. I loved how it was set up, it really helped me make a good decision about whether to come see the house in person or not.

Great advice Mimi! You just have to do some leg work! Lexington is hosting the 2010 World Equestrian Games next year and so many locals are sprucing up their homes and have them available for rent during the Games!
