No matter where you travel these days, disaster can strike. People can become stranded, trapped, or injured as a result of accidents or natural disasters while away from home. To protect yourself and your family, be prepared. Create a travel safety kit. You never know when it may come in handy.
What to Include:
- Flashlight- If your hotel loses power or you are stranded in your car a flashlight can help you to navigate your way around unknown surroundings to find help.
- Bottled water- If you are stranded or if someone is injured in an accident, water will help to clean the wounds or can be used to keep you from thirst while you are waiting for help.
- Ziploc bag full of important documents- This includes a copy of your passport (if traveling abroad), driver’s license, travel itinerary, and a list of important phone numbers. Copies of these things will also help identify you if your wallet or other personal items are stolen.
- First aid kit- It should include: bandages, antibiotic ointment, alcohol swabs, pain relievers, a collapsible cup, smelling salts, gauze, and tape.
- Cell phone- A cell phone is a must for any type of travel these days.
- Snacks- If you are ever in a major traffic jam due to accident or inclement weather, you may get hungry. There was a news story about people trapped on their plane due to weather delays. A little something to munch on like protein bars or cereal bars would go a long way to keeping you calm.
- Jumper cables- If you run out of juice, jumper cables will get you going when that friendly motorist stops to help you.
- Flares- When traveling by car, flares will draw attention to the scene of an accident especially if the car has run down an embankment where it is not easily spotted from the road.
- Extra set of clothing- No matter where you are traveling, anything can happen. In that eventuality, put a clean shirt, a pair of underclothes, and a pair of pants in a carryall bag that you will keep with you.
- Batteries- If you have a flashlight, you will need batteries to keep it going if it is in use for a prolonged period of time. Carry at least eight “C” size batteries.
- Portable radio- A portable radio will keep you aware of what’s going on in an emergency situation.
Whenever you travel it’s helpful to be prepared in case of unforeseen events. Once you’ve packed your travel kit, keep it packed if you plan on taking a lot of trips. That way, you just need to grab it and go.
