If you are looking for an action packed film with lots of huge creatures, the Transformers movie opened nationwide on July 2, 2007. The film is produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Michael Bay. It is intended to bring the popular cartoon series of the same name to life on the big screen.
The plot of the movie revolves around the two transformer factions: the Autobots and the Decepticons. The Autobots are the good guys led by Optimus Prime. Megatron is the leader of the evil Decepticons. Their battle begins on their home planet Cybertron and then, Earth.
In a fierce battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons, the Decepticon force destroys Cybertron in their search for an object called the Allspark. Both forces are dispersed, with some landing on Earth. Megatron learns that the Allspark is on Earth, but ends up frozen in an ice floe while trying to locate it.
The film then cuts to the present day. Several Decepticons are already on Earth disguised as vehicles. They include: Scorponok, Starscream, Bonecrusher, and Blackout. The names are taken from the Decepticon characters in the cartoon series.
One Autobot, Bumblebee, landed on Earth and he is disguised as a vehicle as well. Bumblebee finds Sam Witwicky (played by Shia LaBoeuf) who possesses a pair of eyeglasses worn by a sea captain relative over a hundred years before. The explorer captain found the frozen body of Megatron and accidentally activated a navigational system that imprinted the Allspark’s location on his glasses.
Sam doesn’t realize the Bumblebee is an alien creature until he sees him transform and send a signal throughout the universe to locate other Autobots. Optimus Prime and others land on Earth and begin to track the Allspark. The movie finds the military fighting these huge robots not only to save Earth, but the Autobots as well.
While the movie echoes with similarities from the cartoon series, it is suited to a more mature audience. The series was already popular with children and now the parents will be hooked. Small children are advised not to see the film because of the violent nature.
The film has a noble plot, but the robots have become life-like machines that wreak havoc everywhere they go. The transformations alone can be scary for a young child who may be watching. Transformers has gotten a grown up look and grown up attitude.
As a parent, consider the age of your child before deciding to let them see the movie. Children under thirteen are not the audience for this film. If they like Transformers, consider purchasing the video series for them to watch instead of the live action movie.
