With so much pressure put upon us to celebrate the holidays, we never acknowledge to ourselves and others the reasons why we either can’t or won’t enjoy them. So let’s make a New Years resolution here and now; we will no longer feel obligated to revel in the things we do not like, but embrace the things we do like about the holidays.
Have you and your family enjoyed certain holiday traditions over the years? Perhaps you have just grown tired of doing the same thing over and over, year after year. Forget about what you are supposed to do. Involve the entire family by asking them what new traditions would be favorable to them, and begin anew. Maybe you and your family would like to spend Christmas alone; or maybe coffee and dessert for your New Years guests would be more to your liking. Remember, it’s your holiday as well. Start thinking about what makes you happy for a change.
There is an old saying, “When you give to others, it comes back to you tenfold.” Instead of sitting home on New Years day, counting the hours until it’s over, why not bake some cakes and cookies and bring them to a home for the elderly; or spend an afternoon serving the homeless at a food shelter. Imagine how depressed and lonely they are! You can easily brighten their day and, before you know it, your blues will disappear.
Surviving the New Years blues can be a difficult and, sometimes, daunting task. If you concentrate on the things that make you happy; and dispense with the traditions and expectations of others, the joy you once felt will envelop you and your spirit will once again soar!
