Time for Mom: Making Time for Exercise

Two female joggers on foggy Morro Strand State BeachYesterday I talked about making time for your girl friends.  Today, I am going to talk about the importance of finding time to exercise.

As mom’s we are so busy taking care of everyone else that we tend to forget about ourselves.  30 minutes of exercise a day are recommended and I have even heard it said that it doesn’t need to be all at once.

Here are some tips to getting in your recommended 30 minutes of activity a day:

  • Turn on some music and dance around with the kids.  Not only are you spending time with them doing something fun, you are moving around.
  • Get up early before the hustle and bustle of the day.  Either go out for a walk/run, find a class to take somewhere, or even do an exercise DVD.  Our cable company has an Exercise On Demand channel, so there really is no excuse.
  • Make a date with a friend.  Knowing that you have to meet someone to exercise is always more motivating – you don’t want to let them down!
  • Schedule a time to exercise and put it on your calendar.  It’s like a date with yourself!
  • Make it a family event – walk to the park or go for a bike ride.  You all get some exercise and some family time together.

Try some of these tips to get yourself moving.  You will feel better and be better equipped to take care of your family.

You have some great tips here, Laura! I have a boy that has A LOT of energy, which gives me the motivation to take a looooong walk with the kiddos. Everyone benefits!

  2. When I'm with my family, I find myself more active. I guess I'm having so much fun that I don't realize it's exercise. Dancing is another favorite and I've even gotten so that I'm not embarrassed to dance in front of people now!

The dancing with the kids part is done daily in this house. My 2 yr old will grab my hand and dance when music comes on LOL. SO we have music time sometime during the day. I also have a work out regimen using Walkaway the Pounds and Zumba Fitness. In the summer we walk the trails next to the lake front a few times a week as well.

I so agree we need to take this time for our fitness, awesome tips!

  4. What's really helped me get exercising is my Wii Fit Plus game. I'm up to an hour and fifteen minutes a day exercising and having lots of fun competitions with the kids in the meantime. The yoga exercises are among my favorites.

I've definitely put on a few pounds since I started working from home. I need to make my health a priority and just get off my butt each day and move!

These are all great suggestions that I've thought of but haven't done. Thanks for the extra motivation to actually MOVE on a regular basis!
