This is the first blog meme I’ve participated in so hope I did this correctly.
Do you have a homeschool- or education-related post? What has worked for you (or in this case, NOT worked for you) in educating your children? What did you do this week to satisfy your kids’ thirst for knowledge?
And remember, you don’t have to be a homeschooler to link up; all parents take part in educating their kids.
Table Teaching
Another unique and interesting way to teach our children, in a non-structured environment, was to place a clear plastic tablecloth on our kitchen table. You can get one at Walmart to fit your dining table. We put a variety of items underneath the tablecloth to help our children learn. The bigger the table, the more things you can put underneath. By placing these items in strategic places near your child’s plate, it gives us a topic to discuss during meal times.
- We have a list of table manners that we abide by so it is close by and we can refer to it when someone is not abiding by them.
- We put a map of the US and a map of the world. Some of the questions I would ask the kids would be where a country was located. Or I would ask what state is east of Colorado? Another would be what continent is Qatar in?
- Our children have Bible verses to memorize so I would have a copy of their verses next to where their plates would be. I can ask them randomly to recite their verses.
- I printed a copy of how many servings of each food group each child is supposed to eat according to their age. I also put that somewhere near their eating area. When they don’t eat their vegetables, I would ask them to look at their chart and see if they’ve eaten their recommended daily serving of vegetables.
- We support a missionary family in Cuba so we put a picture of their family to remind us to pray for them.
Here are other things people have put under their tablecloth:
- Human anatomy that labels all the different parts
- Lyrics to songs
- Pictures made by the kids
What other things can you think of to teach at the table?

Great ideas Mimi!
The dining table is such a great environment for kids to learn – especially those active kids who learn best when doing more than one thing at a time
