3 Reasons Mom Should Have A Hobby

Moms these days are busy, but we’re more stressed than ever before and in need of lifestyle choices that help us be happier. Having a hobby may be just the ticket.

Having a hobby relieves stress

Spending time with a hobby replaces negative thoughts and replaces them with positive thoughts and feelings. Having a hobby or creative outlet can lift your spirits and help with depression.

Unlike passive activities like television viewing, a hobby provides intellectual stimulation while simultaneously relaxing you. Repetitive actions like those used in knitting are especially calming.

Hobbies help you parent better

We are good at signing our children up for lessons and classes and encouraging them to have hobbies, but we forget that we also need to learn new things and grow as people. Hobbies also connect you with other people who share your interests.

A hobby can help you maintain your separate identity as a real person and not just as Mom. This models healthy habits and boundaries for our kids.

Hobbies provide a refreshing change from your routine

If you’re a stay at home Mom, you may be frustrated because at the end of the day you can hardly point to anything you’ve “done”. That’s because of the repetitive nature of housework and childcare.

In generations past, women pursued hobbies like quilting, sewing, knitting, crochet and embroidery not only because they were enjoyable but because they provided tangible value to the family, either providing clothing for their backs or much needed income.

Why not carve out some time to pursue a hobby Mom?

Collecting Postcards

When I was a little kid, my mom used to have a collection of postcards. Her postcards have topics ranging from the very mundane to the most exquisite Christmas postcard printing piece that was sent by my great grandmother who lives in Europe.

My mother had this huge album where she used to place all the postcards that were sent to her by every relative, either living abroad or just around the corner from our house. My cherished memories actually include my mom’s collection of postcards because it signifies the start of a happy holiday season for our family. Postcards mean that Christmas is just around the bend and we’ll be having all kinds of gifts from mom and dad, and of course, from the other relatives.

For most collectors, I understand that postcard printing pieces, especially those considered vintage, has more than holiday meaning. Postcards and their rich embossing and design teach about the past. Especially those beautiful detailed cards where lifestyles of the past decades have made it to most vintage collections. Greetings made from different parts of the world. Students presenting postcards to their teachers. A boy courting a lady love. These are just a few of the traditions that have been captured in most vintage postcards particularly those from the Victorian era.

What’s more, collecting them is also affordable. You don’t need lots of money to buy unique postcards, with every changing of the season. Except maybe if you’re going for the most vintage and limited collection pieces, well, that would really fetch a high price.

But if you’re like my mom, I know you would save your every dollar to be able to purchase the postcard design you really want. There seems to be a lot of postcard printing pieces that you can add to your little nest of collection. Most antique shops or trade shows often carry so many vintage postcards that you’ll think you’ve died and gone to postcard heaven if you’re really an avid fan.

Nowadays, there’s the ubiquitous web where you can go online and bid for certain collections. Prices vary though, and would often have a volatile nature. So better watch out for the market before you indulge yourself with your bid price.

But if you’re not successful and you can’t seem to find the postcards you’re looking for, why not try the services of online postcard printing companies. Most online postcard printing companies are very competent in providing replicas of your desired postcard printing designs even from eras of the past. And with state-of-the-art technology and equipment, producing postcards that are true to the original is easier done.
