Candles. Just the mere lighting of them creates a nice ambiance in your home. With a little creativity, you can simply and easily transform your environment from the ordinary to the magical. All you need is to keep a few staples on hand.
Staples:
- glass hurricane containers in various sizes
- a variety of votive holders
- shallow pedestal bowls- glass or other material
- urns- from tiny to medium size (garden centers or tag sales)
- fresh flowers, flower petals
- stones- from outside or from the craft store
- coffee beans
- candles- natural wax if you can find them- votives, pillars in several sizes, some jars
Tips:
- Make sure to choose candle scents that are not overpowering. This is especially important in the dining area as the scent from the candle can interfere with the taste of the food.
- Choose natural wax if possible. Not only is there less soot, but soy wax cleans up easily with warm water and soap.
- Glass candle containers can be found cheaply at big discount stores. If you use glass you find at tag sales or from your home make sure the glass is about the thickness as a votive holder, otherwise the heat may shatter it.
- Group items in threes. Just as in decorating candles look better when arranged in groups of three. The exception would be when using same size tapers, then the rule is groups of two.
- Use odd items creatively- odd butter dishes/plates, mason jars, urns, hollowed out fruit and vegetables all can make interesting and inexpensive containers.
- Tag sales can yield great finds.
Table Top Candlescape Ideas:
Pretty in Pink
5-10 minutes
This a simple- but not overdone- romantic, feminine setting.
Take a large clear glass hurricane container, set a pink pillar in the bottom and sprinkle pink flower petals around the base of the pillar.
On the table top, scatter a few more flower petals, a bit of greenery, and a few votives as well. The table cloth should be a paler shade of the candles, the plates white, glass, or your favorite delicate china.
Pale pink is stunning in this arrangement, but any color can be used, if you can match the flower petals.
Lemon Fresh
15 minutes
The color theme is lemon, cobalt blue and white. It’s stunning, contemporary and fresh.
The table centerpiece is a cobalt bowl holding lemons. Interspersed with the lemons are ivy leaves/branches (not too many) and 3-5 “lemon” votives, depending in the size of your bowl. To make a lemon votive cut off the top inch of the lemon and hollow it out. Insert a white votive.
The table cloth needs to be white. Place a few more white votives in cobalt colored votive holders. Place a few small vases (clear glass) with yellow flowers among the votive holders.
If you need a side board candlescape, a larger arrangement of daffodils and tulips along with more votive, is stunning.
Note: The big discount stores carry cobalt colored votive holders. Sometimes they have coordinating glass pedestals. If so, get them. If you can’t find solid blue, then use blue and white- you can find these readily at tag sales or Japanese stores.
Let your light shine!

Maureen,
As a confirmed “candle addict”, nothing looks nicer to me or is easier to do than a lit candlescape.
I change the scents for the seasons, colors for my decor and my candle pieces when I need a change. Thanks for giving me some great tips!
Maureen,
I love the pretty in pink vision. Awesome!
I can’t wait until my own flowers are blooming and I can bring in some fresh petals.
Thanks for the smile I got thinking of spring.
How fun! I am deathly afraid of having candles around because I have small ones. I wish I could use them.
Oooh! I love candles, but I am never quite sure what to do with them all, these are some fabulous ideas! I am always a sucker for great decorating and design tips!
We don’t burn too many candles here and prefer to use melts but I love your idea to use odd items like a butter plate. Very interesting.
Good tips on using lightly scented or scent free candles in the dining room! So much of “taste” deals with smell. You don’t want your dinner “tasting’ like your flower-scented candle! : ) And soy wax is VERY easy to clean!
