Pregnancy is a time of discovery and fears for both mother and father. The body goes through many changes and sometimes it seems that it is out of control. If your emotions are just as out of control, here are a few tips to deal with those changes in mood.

Emotional upheaval is not uncommon for the expectant mother. Thinking of your new baby brings tears of joy and anxiety. Am I eating the right foods? Will I have the patience to be a mother? There are no rules for motherhood.

Now that you are pregnant, bodily changes begin to occur. You feel fatigue, nausea, heartburn, weight gain, and swelling in the ankles to name a few. On top of all that, your clothes are getting snug due to your expanding abdomen. Some women have a hard time feeling happy let alone beautiful.

All of these things can start a cascade of emotions. Realizing that all of the questions and changes are normal is the first step to coping during pregnancy. You are not the first new mother and you won’t be the last.

Learn to take it easy. Everything doesn’t have to be perfect before baby arrives. Overdoing it leads to anxiety. Doing a few improvements at a time won’t stress you out. Family and friends would be glad to pitch in and help paint the nursery or organize baby clothing.

When emotions run high, things are said that may be misunderstood. To avoid this, communicate with your partner. Letting him help you deal with your feelings will produce a favorable outcome for everyone. This way, your partner will know that any sudden outbursts or tears are not aimed at him.

Stress can wreak havoc with a normal body, but it can do more damage with a pregnant one. Finding ways to cope with stressful situations will keep you healthy both mentally and physically. Schedule a prenatal massage and ask your partner to join you. This can be a stress reliever and a bonding moment all in one.

Practicing some form of meditation on a daily basis may guard against stress before it gets out of control. Yoga classes for pregnant women will teach you techniques for stress management that can be used even post pregnancy. If the mood swings seem to be more than prenatal jitters, see a professional counselor.

A small percentage of mothers develop mild depression during their pregnancy. This depression could grow more serious if untreated. Talking to a counselor will determine the extent of the depression and courses of treatment.

Mood swings are common during pregnancy. These ideas will help you and the expectant father to deal with them when the time comes.
