Washing clothes is a never ending chore. There will always be dirty clothes, so there will always be a need to wash them. Put a stop to endless washing by organizing your laundry day.
Let your family in on the plan. The task will be less work for you if the family pitches in. If one day a week is to be dedicated to laundry washing, then everyone needs to make sure they have their dirty clothing ready.
Start early in the morning. If washing day is Saturday or Sunday (either of these days is recommended) getting a jump on the day will still allow the family time for other activities. No one wants to be cooped up in the house all day doing chores so make it easy on everyone.
Make laundry day a family affair. Designate a place to sort clothing into piles. If your laundry room is big enough, you can do it there. Otherwise, you may need to designate certain types of clothing to a specific laundry basket. Purchasing a clothing sorter will help if you have limited space in your laundry room.
Start with regular clothing. Separate colors from whites. Next, separate the clothing according to fabric type. Jeans should have a load all to themselves. Make sure to wash full loads to conserve water.
Check clothing labels. If you have anything that needs to be hand washed, separate it out and designate a member of the family to take these items and wash them in a bathroom sink. Dry clean only items, like suit jackets or silk blouses, should be gathered and hung up to be taken to the dry cleaners.
While you begin washing clothes, someone else could be stripping the linen off of the beds. Whatever you can wash should be washed on laundry day. Don’t forget pillow cases and any throw blankets you may have on the couch. If your comforters are too bulky for the washing machine, send your spouse to wash them at the local Laundromat.
Don’t forget towels and kitchen linen. Kitchen hand towels and dish rags can accumulate smells if not washed regularly. Use non-chlorine bleach when washing this load.
As long as you can make a complete load, keep washing. If you don’t have enough clothing to make a load, leave it until last. Some things may have to wait until the next week.
To save headache and water, doing laundry on one specific day a week makes sense. The entire family can pitch in so that the task is not a burden for any one person. Start washing clothes early so you can get out and enjoy the day-together.
