My Biggest Mistake – Motherhood Lessons
February 1, 2009 by adavant
The biggest mistake I’ve made as a mom was allowing my son to sit in the big part of the buggy in Walmart. I know it clearly says on the buggies not to allow your child to sit or stand in that area of the buggy, but I did. That day he pitched a fit to do so and in a desperate effort to have him quiet and happy my hubby and I allowed him to. We were standing right with him, he’d be OK, right? Wrong.
We were approaching the photo developing center at Walmart. I was pushing the buggy my hubby sort of guiding it as he tried to watch our approximately 18 month old son as he stood in the large cargo area of the buggy.
I was talking with the lady in the photo developing center and my son was trying to reach for me. About that time my husband decided he’d move the buggy closer to me so that our son could talk to me.
As he moved the buggy my son lunged for me, loosing his balance he fell head first onto the hard concrete floor of the Walmart. Pow! His head sounded like a gun going off as it hit.
I screamed “My baby, my baby!” Tears began to flow as in slow motion the rest of the event unfolded. My husband quickly picked up our son and the ladies around us asked if we wanted an ambulance. We said no and hurried for the door.
I can remember sprinting and crying and screaming worried he’d never talk or walk again. I feared the worst.
As we got outside to our mini van my husband handed the baby over to me as I clutched him tightly. My was screaming but no tears were present. A huge knot had popped out on his forehead, blue and bulging.
It was one of the scariest moments of my life. We arrived shortly at the emergency room and my son was checked out. Luckily he only received a huge bruise as a result that took weeks to disappear but will ever be a thought in my mind.
None of the rest of my children will ever ride in the large area of the Walmart buggy and every time I see a child riding there I want to scream, please make them get out.
