Motherhood Lessons #1

September 1, 2008 by Christina Lemmey

Welcome to Mom's Talk Network! Have you checked out our free Guides for Moms? Be a Great Mama is one to start with :)

Moms Talk Network.comWelcome to a brand new blog meme, Motherhood Lessons.

The object is simple: share with us and your readers a lesson that you learned from your own mom, a special mom in your life, or while raising your own children. There’s no right or wrong answers…just lessons that each of us can learn and implement with our own children.

Link your post back to this one, leave a comment below so we can visit and learn from you, and then tag 2-3 other moms to participate.

I’ll go first to get things rolling…

My kids joke with me that I have a bad memory. Almost everyday I enter a room with a good intention but then get sidetracked into doing something else, forgetting the original task at hand. Or I’ll tell the kids to do something and have no recollection of doing so 10 minutes later. It’s a source of great entertainment for them to see me forget things.

BUT…I remember the little things from my childhood, like going on vacation each and every year. Granted, the destinations are often fuzzy but I firmly remember loading up the car, luggage piled high on the roof, heading off to unknown places. Even just a weekend camping trip was memorable because we were spending time as a family, doing something new.

My mom also loved to bake so we always had a cake, brownies, or cookies in the house. Of course, with four kids in the house they had to be rationed but every lunch bag had a homebaked treat in it.

And of course I remember my mom always meeting us as we stepped off the bus. She was the happiest stay at home mom who truly felt it was her mission in life to be home with her children and keeping our house clean and orderly. We never had to enter an empty house or fend for ourselves at a young age and we never held it against her for not having a career.

So, my Motherhood Lesson for all moms, especially those with young children, is that kids remember the small stuff. Sure, big vacations to Disney or the latest video game console may be cool, but it’s the little things that matter most.

Count your hugs and kisses rather than your dollars because those hugs and kisses matter most. How many times have you eaten dinner together as a family? Or talked to each other without the television on?

Just one simple change will make a world of difference to your children.

Now I’m tagging these awesome moms to continue the meme:
