Many moms know the beauty benefits of using Epsom salt in the bath to detoxify the body or as an exfoliator to get luxuriously soft skin. But did you know it can be a huge help in family first-aid, the garden, and even the garage?
Doctor Mom to the Rescue
If you’re a mom that loves natural cures for minor maladies, then Epsom salt can be your best friend. Let’s say your 5-year-old fell and scraped his elbow, your teenager is crying her eyes out because she got a blackhead the day before prom, and your husband is banned from taking his shoes off in the house because his feet smell like old cheese.
Just add ½ cup of Epsom salt to warm water and have your husband soak his feet for 10 minutes. For your son, soak a towel in warm water and Epsom salt and apply to the scrape for 20 minutes. And for your daughter, add a teaspoon of Epsom salt and 3 drops of iodine to 1/2 cup boiling water. Apply to the blackhead 3-4 times with a cotton ball or swab and the blackhead will dislodge.
I Never Knew I Had a Green Thumb!
Epsom salt can be used as a fertilizer and to deter pests. Epsom salt, contains magnesium and sulfur, which are two minerals plants need to grow big and strong. Add two tablespoons to a gallon of water and sprinkle on houseplants and the lawn to keep them greener than green. Plus, garden pests like slugs and voles hate Epsom salt. And so do raccoons, by the way. If you sprinkle some Epsom salt around your garbage cans, the masked marauders will stay far away.
The Mommy Mechanic
I think one of the most amazing uses of Epsom salt is to recharge a car battery. If you’re like me, and have no idea how to use jumper cables, just dissolve an ounce of Epsom salt in warm water and add to each battery cell.
The Beauty of Mom
It’s the end of the day and you’ve been the doctor, the gardener, and the mechanic. Now it’s time for some “me time”. Just dissolve the following in the bath and relax. You deserve it!
1 Cup Epsom Salt
1 Cup baking soda
3 drops Jasmine essential oil
3 drops Rose essential oil

Oooooh – love how Epsom salts work in the bath – but these are more reasons to love them. I had no idea they were a garden helper – gonna keep that in mind this year! And the battery charger? I’ll have to keep some in my car, too.

Wow, is epsom salt the new baking soda? Thanks for the ideas to use it. I have only used it in baths when I had swollen feet!

I’ve never watered all my plants with dissolved salt, but I have sprinkled it on the ground around the rose bushes to help the soil.
Good post!
