People everywhere are blogging. It has become the hottest thing on the Internet these days. A blog is a way to interject a bit of ourselves into cyberspace. You too can learn to set up and operate your own blog.

Setting up a blog differs slightly from site to site. The first thing to do is to choose which program you would like to use. Two program choices are Blogger and WordPress. You can own as many blogs as you want and each can be dedicated to a different subject or platform.

The next step is to decide whether you want to use the program’s free blog hosting or purchase a separate service. A web host manages the platform where your blog will be based. There is a fee for separate web hosting and acquiring a web address (domain) for your blog.

Let’s start with Blogger. Blogger is a popular blog website that is easy to use. You can go to Blogger.com to learn more about their services.

Blogger gives easy step-by-step instructions for creating a blog. The steps consist of: create an account, choose a sign-in name and password, choose the name you want others to see, enter an email address, and accept the terms of agreement.

Now you need to choose a blog title. How will you identify your blog? The name should be meaningful to you or related to the subjects you will be writing about. If you use Blogger’s free service, your url will look something like YOURBLOG.blogspot.com. If you choose to purchase your own domain and hosting, you can eliminate the “blogspot” portion of your url. From here you can choose options that will allow you to customize the look of your blog. Once that is done you are finished and the blog is ready for posting.

WordPress is another popular blog site. As with Blogger, WordPress has a free option where they host your blog or you can choose to add Wordpress to your own site. A unique benefit here is that they will do the initial installation to your server for free. This only applies to your first blog and you can find out more at WordPress.org. This is perfect for those who want to use WordPress but do not have the technical background in web setup and design to perform such an installation themselves. For those who are a bit more tech savvy, WordPress offers a quick and easy five minute installation process. Detailed instructions can be found at WordPress.org.
Blogs are useful tools in your business and personal lives. They can be used to promote your business, express personal opinions, keep in touch with friends and family, and to record thoughts and feelings as with a journal.
