Free Chicken For One And All!
How excited I was when I heard I could get 4 coupons for free chicken from Kentucky Fried Chicken. A coupon for 2 pieces of their new grilled chicken, a biscuit and two side dishes.
For this cash strapped mom that seemed fantastic. I printed off my coupons and planned, told the kids and planned a trip for a nice meal out.
I bet you all know how that turned out.
Up In Smoke
KFC invited America for a free chicken dinner & then got surprised when America showed up. They blame Oprah for sending the promo into hyperdrive, but I blame KFC for putting no limit on the number of coupons one person could download.
It seems people who were able to access the site to get their free coupon were printing hundreds of them & selling them on E-Bay. A sad statement on today’s economy, but how could marketing folks at KFC not predict that a problem might arise and put a limit on coupon downloads?
We’ll Get Our Chicken Someday
Today I trudged up to my local KFC & filled out forms to get my rain check. No, they didn’t know how long it would be before they came in the mail. No, they didn’t know when I would be able to use the rain checks I got in the mail. The poor woman behind the counted looked like if she had to explain the whole situation one more time she would explode.
The whole situation give me a hankerin’ for good old McDonald’s.

Ah yes, another marketing plan not thought out well. Hasn’t this happened before elsewhere? Someday these companies may just learn something, huh? All it takes is someone like Oprah to talk about it – and in our economy everybody has to cross their “T’s”, don’t they?
