You are never too old to fall in love. But, your love interest may be too young. This is part of the premise for an upcoming romantic comedy called I Could Never Be Your Woman.
The movie stars Michelle Pfeiffer (What Lies Beneath) as an older divorcee who falls for a younger man, played by Paul Rudd (Clueless). Michelle Pfeiffer’s character has never had much luck with men beginning with her former husband and father of her teenage daughter, played by Saoirse Ronan. When she finally meets a man she has something in common with, he is quite a bit her junior.
Should she pursue him or leave it alone? Does it matter that she could probably be his mother or at least his much older sister? These and other questions play a part in the budding romance between these two people. The physical part of the relationship is okay for her, but when something more serious and permanent could be on the horizon, she may have to rethink her position.
While all this is taking place, Pfeiffer’s daughter (Ronan) is experiencing the first pangs of infatuation herself. She notices a change in the way she feels when she’s around a certain local young man. Having no real role model to speak of when it comes to romance and the like, she wonders if what she’s experiencing could be called “the real thing”. So, she embarks on a journey to find out if those butterflies in her stomach are what love is all about.
As if this isn’t enough of a storyline, add Mother Nature to the mix, played by Tracey Ullman (The Tracey Ullman Show). A quirky Mother Nature decides that these two will be her next project. Interject a little mischief and mayhem on her part and who knows where these two couples could end up.
I Could Never Be Your Woman seems like a made for spring comedy with Mother Nature playing a role akin to that of meddlesome fairy folk in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. But, whatever movie Tracey Ullman is in can be sure to have a few laughs.
The director Amy Heckerling (Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Clueless) has directed Rudd before in the movie, Clueless. While I have only seen Michelle Pfeiffer in dramatic roles, comedy may come easy to her.
