How To Survive the Winter Doldrums With Your Family

Blue in YellowThe holidays are a distant memory, the skies are gray and spring seems so far away. Here are a few ways to pass the time while you are waiting for spring.

Gather some craft supplies that are easy for kids to work with without needing your direct supervision such as construction paper, water color paints, glue, googly eyes, die cut foam shapes, clay, tissue paper, and Popsicle
sticks. I’ve also used water color crayons, oil pastels and origami paper (with an easy to follow book) for more creative fun.

Other great ideas:

  • Snuggle on the couch together and enjoy some winter-themed picture books such as Owl Moon, Katie and the Big Snow, Snowflake Bentley, The Snowy Day, Snowballs, Snow Crazy and The Snowman.
  • Audio books (readily available from your library) are a great way to keep your kids entertained and learning at the same time.
  • Plant a pretty indoor plant by your window to bring a bit of spring into your home.
  • Find an elementary age weather calender on the web and let the kids keep track of the daily highs, lows and draw in the clouds, rain and snow.
  • Look for early signs of spring with your kids…an early bud outside or the first returning birds.
  • Make real hot chocolate with melted chocolate and milk.

Enjoy this time of year for what it is and make memories with your family. One of my most treasured memories of my childhood in New York is going out in the new fallen snow and being the first to put down tracks.
