People take on part-time jobs for a number of reasons. Some want to pay off a debt; others may want extra money for vacation. Whatever the reason, make sure that you choose a job that is right for your circumstances.
How much money are you trying to make? The part-time job you choose should be worth your while. If you want a part-time job for a specific period of time, make sure that the pay will net you the amount that you need.
What are the hours? Find out what the hours are for the position that you are considering. The work schedule should not interfere with your regular job responsibilities or disrupt your home life.
Check out the environment. Ads for jobs in the newspaper are meant to be flashy to catch your attention. What looks good on paper may not come across in reality. Before you go in and ask for an application, get a feel for the workplace. This will be possible in retail stores, grocery stores, and any type of business that serves the public. If the part-time position is in a doctor’s office or telemarketing type customer service rep, them you may have to rely on word of mouth as to the climate of the job. Find out all the information that you can to avoid wasting your time and theirs.
What will be my job duties? Ask up front exactly what your position will entail. If the ad says customer service associate, find out if that means running a register or stocking shelves. If you have weak knees or trouble with your lower back, then standing on a ladder stocking shelves will not do for you. Make sure that you can actually perform the job they are advertising.
Will I be required to work on weekends or holidays? Ask this question up front. Some jobs count on their seasonal or part-time workers to take the load off of their regular employees during the weekends. If you are looking for a Monday through Friday evening position, then weekends will not work for you. If holidays are important family occasions for you and holidays are required, talk this over with your spouse. It may be that you have to decide on one holiday to spend with the family and sacrifice the others for work. But, don’t take for granted that this will be okay without discussing it with your loved ones.
Whatever your needs, taking the time to choose the right part-time job is just as important as finding the right primary job. Take the time to ask the important questions and get the facts. The experience of a part-time job should be a pleasant one.
