Help Your Child Find A Summer Internship

Summer employment is very beneficial for teenagers and college students. They earn their own money and learn valuable skills. Here are a few ways to help your child find an enjoyable internship this summer.

Show your child how to create a resume. Most Microsoft programs have resume templates that can be used as a guide. Listing all previous employers will give hiring agents an idea of your child’s past experiences.

Volunteer work is also helpful on a resume. All valuable work experiences are not necessarily the paid ones. Offering his/her services at a homeless shelter speak to the character of your child.

Listing your child’s interests will give him or her somewhere to start when searching out an internship. What are his/her future plans? If your child aspires to be a veterinarian or a plant specialist, jobs with kids would not be a good fit.

There are other individuals that can help you with this endeavor. Enlist the aid of school guidance counselors. They should have a list of companies and colleges offering internships for the summer. Friends or family members may work for a company or own their own business and could put your child on the trail of potential leads.

If you can support your child for the summer, then letting them pursue such an opportunity can make a big difference to their future. Performing well during the internship could earn them a future job offer from the company. Colleges and universities offer internships in a number of disciplines for high school and college students. The internships usually offer a stipend and pay for room and board on the campus for the duration of the program.

Once the choices for internships have been made, applications have to be filled out. The best way to do this is by filling out all applications at one sitting, being mindful of the deadlines for the college programs. Guiding your child through the application process ensures that they are filling them out properly.

An interview may be required after the application process is completed. First impressions are always very important. Encourage your child to remove piercings in places other than their ears and to comb their hair into a conservative style. If they are serious about landing an internship, their appearance is crucial.

Practicing a few interview questions can relieve their nervousness. You won’t know the exact questions that will be asked, but you can practice with some of the more common ones to work on their grammar and clarity.

Summer internships can lead to future employment for your child. Valuable experience can be gained within their chosen field giving them a head start on their career.
