I have to smile some days at how God works in my life.
I started a diet about two weeks ago. It’s a loose combination of Weight Watchers and Slimfast. I know I should be cooking fresh meals, but my world is crazy right now so I need things to be as simple and ‘grab n go’ as it can get while keeping me out of the drive thru at McDonalds.
I pray now and then about losing weight and I ask God to help me eat right and do what I should but I’m not always good at listening to His advice on the matter on a day in day out fashion.
Today, He made his message come through loud and clear.
I’ve been ‘mostly good’ on my diet. I did go to Carrabas earlier this week and enjoyed bread and herbs with olive oil along with a delicious chicken meal. I didn’t go over the top and happily brought home a big doggy bag. (Which by the way, Sean devoured for lunch the next day.) Since then I’ve stuck pretty close to plan.
This morning, I headed out to run a few errands. I had an affiliate check to cash and decided to use that money to go grocery shopping.
As I drove to the store I thought to myself, ‘I’m going to grab a fresh bagel and cream cheese.’
Then I thought - you know, I’ve been good. I think I’ll take a break from the diet this weekend and just grab whatever I want for today and tomorrow. (Sounded good to me!)
I walk in the store – go straight to the bakery and grab a huge blueberry bagel and a pack of cream cheese. Then I headed over to snacks and grabbed a bag of scoops and my favorite chili cheese dip. With a inner grin I moved on with dreams of things like cheese hot dogs, garlic bread and ice cream.
I reached the freezer section and what do I see?
The biggest end cap display of Lean Cuisine meals I’ve ever seen, all on sale for a ridiculously low price.
I quickly try to turn away and what do I see?
A huge display of Slimfast, all on sale for a super cheap deal.
Grrrr.
I’m immediately reminded of how much money I’ve saved in the last two weeks by eating light and staying away from snacks and fast food restaurants. (And I’m reminded I have a hospital bill to pay and a mini vacation I want to take in the fall.)
Dang it all.
You may laugh at me – but I am doggone sure that God put that sale on for me.
I loaded up on my favorite Lean Cuisine meals and grabbed two cases of Slimfast and peddled past the garlic bread and icecream. I skipped the cheese hot dogs too.
I kept my bagel and chips though.
I figure if He didn’t want me to have those he would have gotten my attention earlier.

I have no doubt God was guiding you through the grocery store. After all, He wants the best for you and gives you what you need. This week is SlimFast on sale – drink up.

Kelly,
I had to laugh as I read your post. Yes, God has a way of doing things like that, doesn’t He?
And isn’t it funny how we try to ignore His messages at times? We know, in the end, we’ll end up doing what He wants, so we may as well right from the start!
I do believe God cares about every part of our lives, no matter how small.
Great post!
I’m laughing so hard at the last sentence!!! Glad you were guided back in the right direction, it’s so hard to stay on track.

I see your point Kelly, but I can’t help but wonder. God didn’t create Slimfast and Lean Cuisine. What God did create – veggies, fruit, whole grains… even the animals (that he okayed for consumption after the Flood) is better for us than anything man comes up with and puts in the package.
The bagel and cream cheese is fine – just make it a whole grain bagel. And what about those bagged salads? The quickest easiest meal would be to dump some fresh romaine (washed and cut for you already) topped with some nuts, cucumbers and tomato. Maybe a little shredded cheese or feta on top.
I know you’re busy, but manufacturers put a cazillion extra ingredients in these foods to trick our taste buds into eating more and feeling less full than we would if we had simple, healthier meals.

Great ending! That made me laugh out loud. But I also add an amen to your thought – I’m sure God wanted you to have a LITTLE something…
I’ve so been there, done that. Except I don’t recall ever being quite so deliberate about cheating for a weekend and planning all the bad stuff I’d eat. LOL

Kelly, I totally relate!!! I’ve been trying to lose 20 lbs for 2 months and I’m pretty sure the reason it’s not leaving my ‘tummy’ is because I keep eating and refusing to exercise! I’m also certain that if I keep procrastinating the 20 lbs is going to turn into 40!!!
Great post….wish I like the taste of SlimFast more!
Blessings,
Susan
