So, you’re ready to start a family. What now? Here are a few tips for those couples who are ready to embark on the joys of parenthood.

Tip One: Find a doctor. If you are ready, choose a gynecologist that makes you both comfortable. Just like you would take the time to choose a pediatrician for your unborn child, take the same time to choose the person who will tend to all of your pregnancy needs.

Tip Two: Stop your birth control pills. Discontinue the birth control pills. Your gynecologist can tell you how long you need to be off of them before any pregnancy attempts will be successful.

Tip Three: Have lots of sex. Make time to be intimate with your partner. Relax and let nature take its course. Try not to think of your sexual encounters with your mate as for the purposes of conception only.

Tip Four: Drop all unhealthy habits. If you drink or smoke, stop them both. These kinds of habits could cause complications with your pregnancy.

Tip Five: Check to see if there are any special concerns due to your age. Parents today are waiting to become parents until later in life when they are more financially sound. Getting pregnant over the age of thirty-five brings with it its own set of concerns. Will my baby be at greater risk for birth defects? Will I have trouble conceiving? Your doctor can perform fertility tests to see if there are any physical factors that could be a barrier to pregnancy. If so, he or she can discuss with you ways to treat the problem and still conceive a child.

Tip Six: Get a physical exam. If you are young and are having trouble getting pregnant, get an exam. Obesity is a factor in infertility. The more excess weight you are carrying, the greater the chance that you will experience problems getting pregnant. Also have a pelvic exam done. Women who experience polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) have trouble conceiving.

Tip Seven: Check him out. If you check out okay with the doctor, the problem could be with your mate. If he is used to wearing tight underwear, tell him to stop. Tight underwear places the testicles into a position that is closer to the body. Here, it is too warm for the sperm. Being held in such close proximity to the body could result in sperm with deformities or poor motility. A test can be performed to determine if his sperm count is too low.

Getting pregnant should be the most beautiful time of your lives. Becoming a parent is a gift. Increase your chances of conception with the tips above for a safe and healthy pregnancy.
