What do most families look forward to during the summer? They look forward to taking a family vacation once the kids are out of school. But, vacations can become quite expensive. To make sure that your budget doesn’t suffer, plan ahead of time.

Budgeting is important for families. Unexpected things like car repairs and doctors visits can wreck finances without a budget. The same is true of the family vacation.

To ensure that the week of fun and adventure doesn’t leave you bankrupt, planning several months ahead is prudent. Creating a vacation fund, much like a Christmas club account, can leave you with more discretionary money than you think. Investigate your vacation options at the conclusion of the current vacation. One solid year is enough time to save for the coming vacation.

Looking into vacation packages that include most of your expenses can alleviate the burden of hidden costs. All-inclusive resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean provide for all meals and drinks so there is no need to budget in for extra food. Travel agents can suggest packages that include airfare and shuttle service to and from the airport.

If your family prefers a vacation closer to home, renting an RV and traveling across country may be exciting. With a vacation like this, it’s important to budget in for gas, food, campground fees, and souvenirs. No matter where you plan to go, having an idea of the how much money you will need, allows you to put aside the appropriate amount every month until the vacation.

A separate savings account keeps the vacation funds away from the household monies. Have the funds deducted directly from your checking account so you don’t even see the money. The higher the cost of the vacation, the more money will need to be deducted.

If the amount of the vacation will interfere with the normal family budget, cutting back on other expenditures can compensate. For the sake of your vacation, forgo that weekly night out. When vacation time rolls around, the family will be glad that they did.

Always over-budget for a vacation. This allows for unforeseen changes. The extra money can also be used for a bit of extra fun for the kids during the vacation or souvenirs for relatives.

No one wants to break the bank in order to take a family vacation. Planning ahead can avoid the pitfalls that these vacations can create. Setting the funds aside on a monthly basis will lessen the headache when the time comes.
