Baby Boomers are finding that exercise is important to health and wellbeing. Here are some tips to help you become healthier and more physically active as you age.
Before you begin any exercise, wear proper sneakers. Begin stretching those leg muscles. If you need to know the proper way to stretch, you can always check online or at your local gym. If you are just starting out, take a walk about 20 minutes every day. Gradually, you will begin to increase not only the time but the mileage as well. If you have a local park near you, use the running track. Take an iPod or portable CD player with you. Trust me, it does get you moving!
It is also advisable to include strength training. This can be accomplished by using weights. You can use 3 or 5 pound weights for arm flexes to get the blood flowing. Exercises like Qi Gong can be quite meditative and promote inner peace and calm. This is especially significant if you are stressed. It is calming and brings about an inner balance and increased energy.
Whether you have been on an exercise program for years, or just starting out, you know that as we grow older, we need to move around more frequently. With the possibility of arthritis and other joint problems, exercise can relieve and keep us limber.
While many of us may not be particularly fond of exercising, it is important for health. Do what you can; walk instead of ride; maintain a healthy diet; and move around as much as possible, especially if you have a job where you are sitting in front of a computer most of the day. Just walk around your chair; stretch, dance - whatever you have to do. Exercise for baby boomers is important. Retirement is just around the corner. What you do now will determine how much you can enjoy life later.
