Summer is the time to try new food and drink. A refreshing summer drink is sangria. Take a look at some of these sangria recipes to see which one that you want to try.
The sangria beverage originated in Spain. It is a summertime wine punch drink. Sangria is typically made with red wine, fresh fruit, and sparkling water or a citrus soda. All over the world, the basic recipe has been adapted to people’ particular tastes and occasions.
Basic Sangria Recipe
- A bottle of red wine
- Fruit cut into wedges (oranges or lemons)
- A shot of brandy
- Two tablespoons of sugar
- Two cups of club soda or ginger ale
Instructions: Combine all ingredients except the soda. Squeeze the juice from the fruit into the drink and then add the wedges themselves. Chill. Add the soda just before serving.
Spicy Sangria
If you are serving up a meal with Mexican or southwestern style fare, spicy sangria can add flavor to the meal. Keeping with the basic recipe, substitute rum for the brandy and use citrus soda instead of club soda or ginger ale. Add limes and a teaspoon and a half of hot sauce.
Instructions: Combine all ingredients except for the citrus soda. Chill. Again, add the soda just before serving. If the sangria is to be served right away, use chilled red wine and serve over lots of ice.
Both of these recipes take less than five minutes to prepare. They are suitable for any summertime occasion. Basic sangria can be served at Fourth of July, Memorial Day, and Labor Day get-togethers.
White Wine Sangria
Sangria doesn’t necessarily need to have red wine as its base. White wine sangria is also easy to make. For those who prefer white wine, the drink is suitable for all occasions including birthday parties and potluck dinners. The drink is light, delicious, and filled with fruity flavor.
White Wine Sangria Recipe
- A bottle of white wine
- Fruit cut into wedges (lemon, limes, oranges, strawberries, peaches, etc.)
- Two thirds cup sugar
- Half a liter of club soda or ginger ale
Instructions: Combine all ingredients except the soda. Mix well and chill overnight. If you want to serve the sangria right away, use chilled white wine and serve over ice.
Sangria Variations
For those who live ‘Down Under’, kiwis and limes are popular fruits to use. Passion fruit combined with white wine makes a sweet and memorable sangria recipe.
Whatever fruits or liquors you decide to use, you can’t mess up this easy recipe. Enjoy sangria all summer long using variations on the recipes mentioned above.
