Earth Day is traditionally celebrated in April. This is an important event and one we should encourage our family and kids to get involved in.
Earth Day was founded by Mr. John McConnell on March 21, 1970. He writes, “When the Vernal Equinox dawned on me, I immediately knew it was right. The Earth tremor that shook our California dwelling at that moment seemed an omen of confirmation. What could be more appropriate than the first moment of spring, when day and night are equal around the world and hearts and minds can join together with thoughts of harmony and Earth’s rejuvenation. Just as a single prayer can be significant, how much more so when hundreds, thousands, millions of people throughout the world join in peaceful thoughts and prayers to nurture neighbor and nature. And so it came to pass we initiated the celebration of Earth Day on March 21, 1970.”
Of course, you don’t have to wait until Earth Day to celebrate and appreciate our great planet. You can do this all year-round. Here are some ideas for celebrating Earth Day with your kids and teaching them about the environment:
Environmentally-Friendly Things to Do for Earth Day: Just a list of things you can do to help your kids gain an appreciate for this great planet.
- Make a Papier Mache Globe: Take this fun craft and make it Earth Day themed.
- Face Painting for Earth Day: Kids love face painting. Try these and other Earth-friendly themes.
- Make a Bird Feeder with Reused Items: Admire nature in your own back yard.
- Plant an Organic Vegetable Garden with Your Kids: Get kids excited about their veggies, by giving them part of this natural process.
Says McConnell, “Earth Day was firmly established for all time on a sound basis as an annual event to deepen reverence and care for life on our planet.” Now, you can firmly establish it into your life too.
