Each family member wants that one place in the house that they can call their own. For teenagers, it’s the bedroom. Help your teenage daughter to create her own piece of paradise with these decorating ideas.

Get an idea of what her likes and dislikes are. Girls are creative people and have a definite idea about their sense of style. If she likes a particular color, start there. Go to a paint store or the paint department of Lowe’s or Home Depot and look at swatches of color. Experiment with texture. Sponging is a popular technique that gives the painted wall the look of a rougher surface.

When choosing paint colors, try to stay basic. Girls change their room decor depending on mood. If the color is too loud or too bright she may want to repaint which is a headache. Also, lighter colors give the room a larger feel. Darker colors will make it seem smaller. Make the accessories the most important stand out in her room so that changing those will make the difference.

Girls love to accessorize. Depending on her choice for the bed linens, purchase accessories like throw rugs, Papasan cushions, and throw pillows in colors or patterns that accent the linens. If she chooses a solid color for the bed, choose accessories with patterns where the dominant color matches the bed.

If she has a desk in her room to do her homework, hang a large cork board on the wall behind it. This will give her room to post homework projects, pictures of her favorite actors and actresses, snapshots of friends, and much more. Use a desk organizer to keep all her pencils, pens, paper clips, and etcetera at hand whenever she needs them.

If her dresser doesn’t come with a mirror, shop for one at a yard sale or discount store. Repaint the mirror to match the room’s decor and hang it on the wall above the dresser. To give her old dresser a new feel, change the knobs every once in a while or paint it to match the colors in the room.

If there is room, add an oversized chair like a Papasan or a small sofa so she can relax and talk to her friends or write in her diary. It gives the bedroom an added sitting room area if she doesn’t want to lie on the bed all of the time. She can entertain her girlfriends here, too.

The point of the decorating tasks is to make the room a special place where she can relax. Let your daughter take the lead on what she wants. It’s your job to make it happen without breaking the bank.
