Boys are a little easier to decorate for than girls. Their tastes run a little simpler and they don’t change as often. Boys, especially teenagers like space to move around. Here are a few decorating ideas to get you and your teenage boy going in the right direction.

Boys tend toward darker colors in their rooms. When helping them to choose the paint color, check out specialty paints. Chalkboard paint colors allow boys to create art on their walls with school chalk. An eraser lets them create new wall art over and over again. If you have a son who is an asthmatic or has severe allergies, you may want to steer clear of the chalkboard paint.

After the painting is done, it’s time to outfit the room. Because boys are into insects and worms one day and stars and planets the next, choose to make the curtains instead of purchasing ready made ones. There are fabrics made with special reflective designs that glow in the dark. Whenever your son decides he wants a new print at his window, head off to the nearest Wal-Mart and let him choose a new fabric.

Boys who are into cars may want a bed shaped like one. If that is not in your budget at this time, turn his existing bed into a car. If you are a mother that likes to sew, this is the perfect project. Scour department and fabric stores to check out their line of fabrics in race car patterns. Buy enough material for a flat and fitted sheet and a comforter. If you are not a seamstress, find one who will sew the bed linens for you to your specifications.

Boys love posters and such items hanging on their walls. To protect the walls from push pin or tape damage, buy them a large cork board. You could find a fairly large one at an office store. Hang it on one of their walls to hold all of their posters, keepsakes, and other odds and ends.

Give your son a spot in the room to entertain their friends. If they have television and gaming system in their room, find a moderate-sized entertainment center to keep all of their audio and video stuff in one place. A few bean bag chairs or large throw pillows can serve as cushions when everyone is playing games or watching a movie.

Teenagers need their own space. Let them decorate their rooms in a way that makes them feel good about being there and inviting their friends in. If they have a direct say in how the room is outfitted, they will be more likely to respect it and make sure that their friends do as well.
