CBC Continued: LaTara Asks Why I Think Giving Is Important
June 24, 2009 by Erin Hill
We’re continuing our conversation with LaTara from Mom Unplugged. I loved reading her answers to my questions about giving and I hope you did too! She has some amazing friends that helped her out when she truly needed it in life.
Now it’s my turn to answer her questions. She asked:
Why do you think it is so important to do nice things for other people? Do you think that people who don’t pay it forward suffer or miss out in any way?
Good questions! I knew you’d make me think.
I think giving to others is one of the most powerful actions we can take in this world because every action we take, whether positive or negative, has a never ending ripple effect. If you think about it, we’re constantly giving (and receiving) in some way, shape, or form. But, is the nature of our actions, or “gifts”, positive or negative?
And I think that depends on how the person feels during the action they take. Does that action make them feel happier, more fulfilled, and energetic? Or does it make them feel drained? As long as someone feels happy and fulfilled in the actions they take, they should keep doing what they’re doing.
And when it comes to paying it forward, I think it’s usually a natural consequence. If actions stem from this place of positivity, that positivity is naturally multiplied, or paid forward, in the future actions of those involved.
For example, let’s say you’re having a bad day and a stranger genuinely smiles at you on the street and says, “Looks like you’re having a tough day. Yesterday was like that for me, but today is much better. So hang in there. Things will get better!”
It’s not like you think to yourself, “Oh wow, he was so nice and made my day brighter, so I’m going to pay it forward.”
Not many people will do that.
But what people will do after experiencing this kind act, is treat others they come in contact with a little nicer than they would’ve before, because they’re genuinely feeling better about themselves and their day. And I think it’s possible that later that day they’ll realize they were inspired to pass on the act of kindness of the stranger without even thinking about it.
So the positive act of that stranger keeps getting passed on and changing the world for the better, and that’s why I think it’s so important.
So that’s my honest answer on the subject of giving. Sorry for getting a bit philosophical, ya’ll!
I’d like to hear others’ opinions so please feel free to comment.
On to the next questions…
I’m a SAHM, and am very new to the work-at-home-mom concept. I’ve been struggling trying to find balance in my life because trying to realize my dream of helping to support my family with my writing has definitely taken up a lot of my time lately.
You have (I hope I counted correctly) 6 different websites ranging from blogs to businesses. Whew! How do you find balance in your life? Was it difficult for you in the beginning to find that balance, too? How long did it take you to feel comfortable in the WAHM role? Do you have any tips on time management and prioritizing?
Thanks, LaTara. I look forward to reading your answers at Mom Unplugged!
