Buzz a Mom: Meet Mary Lutz
March 4, 2009 by Marya
Mary Lutz is a wife, mom to 4 kids, Nana to 2 grandkids, blogger and a youth leader. She is also a virtual assistant! Talk about having a lot on her plate! I’ve asked Mary to share about her church involvement.
Can you tell me about your background and what ministry activities you participate in?
Well, I started out in youth ministry when I first got saved back in 1997. My best friend, who lead me to the Lord, and her husband were the youth pastors at our church and so I started helping them out, having no idea it was God’s call on my life.
After they moved away and I changed churches, I started helping out with the youth ministry again. Now I am the assistant to our youth pastor, taking care of all the administrative duties.
With that came the opportunity to help coordinate two big events our church is involved with. The Big Ticket Festival and Chosen Youth Conference. For Big Ticket I and my husband head up BTF Minister’s Connection.
It’s a way to connect with the people in the ministry who will be attending Big Ticket. For Chosen I help plan and coordinate from the very beginning and am the administrative assistant as well. I LOVE being involved with both of these events and helping in the capacity God has allowed me.
How do you balance your time between ministry, being a mom and working at home?
How do I balance it all??? Time management and knowing my limits. I used to work out of the home while being involved in the above ministries. Now, since my work at home business is growing, I find it even tougher, yet easier to balance it all. Let me explain. It’s easier because I now set my own schedule.
I devote Wednesdays to youth ministry, although if I have time, I may post a blog or two. It’s tougher because it’s so easy to get caught up in my work, I forget to put the laptop down. I love working from home so much and love what I do, it doesn’t feel like I’ve been sitting in front of a computer for 12 hours a day! So, I have to be sure to make time for things I don’t like so much such as housework, LOL.
Can you share your time management secrets?
I try to make sure I make a daily schedule every day to help keep me on track. I created a separate calendar in Outlook to make a daily schedule on every day. I start out the morning filling in times to write for each of my blogs or whatever my task at hand is.
I set reminders to alert me 15 minutes before the next task is to start and then to snooze and remind me again 5 minutes before the next task is to start. If I need more time on a task, I can reset the time and move the next tasks down accordingly. It works really well and I rarely have to reset any times.
The key is knowing how long it takes me to write an article and knowing what I’m going to write about ahead of time. Whenever I think of something that would make a good blog post, I either jot it down on paper or enter in the time slot on the calendar. Most of the blogs I write for, I write under a specific category so that makes narrowing down the ideas for articles much easier.
So, setting a schedule and knowing your limits are the key to balancing work, church activities and home!
