Buzz A Mom: LaTara Ham-Ying
May 28, 2009 by Erin Hill

We were lucky enough to talk to LaTara Ham-Ying for our first “Buzz a Mom” interview. She is a “woman of God, wife, entrepreneur, internet marketer, writer, speaker, and an authentically unplugged mom”, and inspires other moms to live authentically on her website, Mom Unplugged: Living Authentically Inside Out.
Tell us a little about your background and your family.
I have a background in the Corporate and retail fields where I served as a Customer service agent, trainer, and management positions. I also served as a group coordinator, project manager and event planner for my former church home for over 10 years in one capacity or another in addition to owning my own day care for 4 years.
So I have a lot of experience connecting, communicating and meeting the needs of the consumer. I guess you could say that service is in my blood. I am the mom of two boys ages 17 and 5 and have been married for 6 1/2 years. We are currently residing in Oklahoma after moving from Chicago were we lived from 2002 until the present. I am also a step-mom and step-granny.
What is your “Mom Philosophy”?
LOL. My “Mom Philosophy” is that our children are not ours but God’s. He blessed us with them to guide and lead into the life that He has prepared for them. That means that our life is not to be buried into our kids’ lives but rather what we do should enhance and encourage them to strive to live the calling set forth by God. This is why I am so adamant about moms having their own life and not living vicariously through the life of our kids. Being a mother is not a calling but rather a role that is a part of the total sum of who you are.
I love your website title. What do you think it takes to live authentically?
To live authentically you have to be real, transparent, unashamed, and available to your specific purpose in life.
In a post called “Share Your Story”, you write that everyone’s story should be shared with others. Can you tell us why you believe this is so important?
Bottom line is that you never know who needs to hear your experience.
In the post, “What Do You Dwell On”, you discuss negative thinking. Can you touch upon how you stay positive in all of the different roles in your life, especially motherhood?
WOW, that is a hard one for me because it does not happen by accident. For me life is not all airy fairy, smell the roses all the time, and love all that you do. It just does not flow for me like that. However, in order to get the best out of life and stay that path set for me, I have to wake up daily pray, seek God, and choose to have a proactive day. I am not necessarily a positive thinker, I am a proactive shaker and mover. I have come to learn that living life in a “reactive” mode really screws up your perception of reality and it affects the choices you make. Often times those choices are not good. By living in a more proactive manner you are more inclined to pay attention to your life and how you are living it; because at that time you are living it with purpose.
You wrote that you have epiphanies often. What was your latest one?
I have recently been working on tightening my brand and revamping the services for my business. So my latest epiphany relates to that. My latest epiphany was that I have to access my skills, talents, personality, and gifts to find out what I need to be offer to my client. This led me to the thought that this is how we are to live life as well. We are to take every part of our being and push it into the purpose for which we are called. Every facet of our being must be fully engaged to effectively carry out whatever we are doing.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Be you on purpose and choose to be proactively prosperous – mind, body, and spirit.
