We have all wished we lived in a magical world. As a child, you probably created a few with your imagination. The movie, Bridge to Terabithia, is about a couple of kids who did just that.
Bridge to Terabithia was the number two grossing film at the box office on its opening weekend. The film stars Robert Patrick, AnnaSophia Robb, and Josh Hutcherson.
The story begins with a boy named Jesse Aarons (Josh Hutcherson). Jesse is a nice, but shy young elementary school student who comes from a poor family. He doesn’t have too many friends until the arrival of Leslie Burke (AnnaSophia Robb).
Little by little, Leslie works her way into Jesse’s life and they become friends. Both kids have an active imagination. They trust each other enough to share their secret passions: for Jesse, it’s drawing, and for Leslie, it’s fantasy stories.
Together, they create the imaginary land of Terabithia in a tree house across a river. The magical land provides many hours of adventure and enjoyment for the two friends. It is their escape.
Life for Jesse and Leslie is both wonderful and bittersweet. What do I mean by that? You’ll have to get the DVD. Share the beautiful and magical world of Terabithia with Jesse and Leslie and watch your own imagination soar.
If you have not had a chance to observe the acting talents of the young actress who plays Leslie Burke, you are in for a treat. Those who know AnnaSophia Robb may remember her from another award-winning children’s book-turned movie, Because of Winn-Dixie. In it, Robb played the precocious daughter of a preacher who brings life and love to a sleepy little town with the help of a stray dog she names, Winn-Dixie.
Bridge to Terabithia is based on a book by Katherine Paterson, written in 1977. Her son, David L. Paterson is a producer and scriptwriter for the film. The book is dedicated to him and based on the true story of his adventures with a childhood friend named Lisa Hill.
The movie is entertaining for child and adult alike. If you have ever had a special friend that made your childhood worthwhile, this movie will rekindle old feelings. The film is a Walt Disney/Walden Media production and was filmed on location in Auckland, New Zealand.
The film represents an updated version of the book, taking it from the seventies straight into the 21st century. Cordless phones replace the old-fashioned rotary ones and electronic gadgets replace board games. The heart of the book is still very much a part of the film despite the changes.
