Living with low self-esteem can be difficult and also depressing. Feeling like you’re not good at something will affect your general outlook on life. But rather than waiting for others to give us that much-needed boost, there are ways we can boost our own self-esteem and live a happier life.
If you don’t take matters into your own hands and try to make these changes yourself, you will likely fall into a vicious cycle which will be harder to break the longer it continues. Take control of your life and start making small changes now!
Ways To Improve Self-Esteem
Getting motivated to make changes can be difficult for those with very low self-esteem. But the first step in improving your self-esteem is to change your way of thinking and then to take action. Even a small step in the right direction is a start.
If your low self-esteem is a direct result of a particular person’s comments, then simply stay away from that person. Know that you deserve to be treated with respect and avoid situations where that doesn’t happen. If you can’t avoid a coworker, then find other ways to communicate, such as by email, and limit your time in the same room.
Find a quiet space at home and make a list of things you like about yourself. It’s much easier to see our faults but fill your head with positive thoughts instead. Do you have great hair? Can you play an instrument? Do you speak a foreign language? Are you a great cook? These are all things that should make you feel proud.
Keep this list where you can see it so you can add to the list and also remind yourself of all your great attributes. When negative thoughts start to invade your mind, take a look at your list or try to remember the things you wrote. Making a habit of this will eventually result in more positive thoughts coming naturally. If necessary, make copies of the list so you can keep it in the bathroom, car, purse…wherever you might need to look at it.
Other Self-Esteem Boosters
Have you always wanted to try some new hobby but were too afraid or too busy? Carve out some time to attend the local college or continuing education program. Challenging yourself will get you out of your comfort zone. Your mind will be busy thinking about a new subject and you get to meet new people outside of work or family. These things will give you a sense of accomplishment, which is great for your self-esteem.
Making positive lifestyle changes can also boost your self-esteem. Eating right, exercising, and getting enough sleep all help to boost our mood, improve our immune systems, get our bodies in better shape, and allow us to think more clearly. They also make it easier for us to fight off stress. These factors are all conducive to higher self-esteem.
While it’s always nice to receive compliments from others, do not rely on those alone. To achieve healthy self-esteem simply take the time to know and love yourself. This is the only body and life we have so if something is making you unhappy, it’s up to YOU to change that! If you feel good about yourself from within, it won’t make as much of a difference if others are negative toward you.

Self-Esteem is very important, so much so, I call it by the term that it should be, that being Self-Love. We are taught as children, that is ego if we love ourselves but that couldn’t farther from the truth.
Before we can give love to anyone else, Self has to learn to love itself first. Because if self has no love for self, how can self give something, it does not understand or have knowledge of? Can a poor man feed his family or even himself without having any food? A man must obtain food for example by working his fields with hard labor. To work hard, he require lots of nutrition, being unselfish, he will share what existing food there is with his family. His family understanding the man require the larger portion so he maintains his strength enabling him to work the fields supplying more food for everyone, they give him the greater portion of food. I acknowledge this is contradictory to the teaching of the Bible, however we can see were the need to place self first in our daily lives every where for example. When flying on an airplane, the flight attendance instructs everyone to place their oxygen mask on themselves first before attempting to place a mask onto another person. Reason for this is, without placing your mask on first, chances are you will pass out due to the lack of oxygen making it unlikely anyone to survive around you. By placing your mask on first, you will help assure the survival of yourself and others.
