Baby Second Trimester: You’re Half Way There

The mom-to-be has made it through the first three months of pregnancy. The “morning sickness” has subsided for most. Let’s see what that precious little one is up to now.

Month 4- The fetus growing inside of you is now about four inches long and looks like an extremely small human being. The placenta is providing nourishment for the baby via the mother’s system. That little one has fingers and toes and has learned how to swallow and suck.

The mother’s abdomen has developed a little pooch-the first outward sign that a life is growing inside of her. Now, friends and family members can experience the reality of impending birth as well. It’s time for maternity clothing. Swelling in the legs and ankles results from standing too long. The feet should be elevated off the floor when sitting.

Month 5- The fetus has more than doubled in length. Now, the child is large enough for an ultrasound to determine the sex if the parents want to know. Hair has begun to grow on the fetus. It now has eyebrows, eyelashes, and hair on its head. Mothers may feel the first “kicks of life” from their babies.

The first time a mother hears the heartbeat of her child, she is undone. The tears of joy flow like rain water. Now that the baby is active, heartburn, bloating, and gas are more frequent. The abdomen may itch because of the stretching due to baby. The face and abdomen develop the “mask of pregnancy”. Cocoa butter will moisturize the skin to prevent noticeable stretch marks and even out the darkening skin tone.

Month 6- The fetus is not so tiny anymore. The baby is about a foot in length and weighs less than two pounds. The eyes of your child are able to open now. Baby’s skin is transparent because fat has not deposited underneath the skin yet. Movement will increase and baby may shift and turn.

Since the baby has grown, he/she may press on the nerves that run down the back of the legs. This could cause the leg to go numb and give out without warning. Backache is also more prevalent as the mother works to maintain balance with her enlarged abdomen. To counteract the aches and pains, a good exercise program is recommended. Walking is okay as long as the heart rate is not increased to excess. Stretching is always a plus to help muscles and joints cope with the added stress of baby.

Mother and baby are two thirds of the way to their glorious meeting. Moms-to-be should learn to relax and enjoy this time in their lives. View each day as a rite of passage into the society of motherhood.

Don’t wait until AFTER the baby is born to start thinking about getting back in shape. You’ll find plenty of advice in the Slim Mom Secrets guide, including TRIMESTER by TRIMESTER videos and audio recordings to help you stay fit and healthy during and after pregnancy. Your baby and your hormones will thank you!
