Working at Home and Mom-ing at Home: Finding the Balance

Mom and son enjoy the wavesThere is a current discussion at Twitter Moms about finding the balance between working at home and taking care of your family. This question has been one of my favorite things to ask on our Buzz-A-Mom projects. Successful work at home moms say pretty much the same thing. Find the “big rocks”, the important stuff and understand that you just can’t do everything.

The past nine weeks as a Moms Talk Network have really been a learning experience in more ways than one. In order to accommodate the ten hour a week commitment, other things had to slide. I kept up with homeschooling my kids, got some exercise and my power naps in (I do have my priorities!) I’ve also been sick three times and suffered through a five night bout of insomnia. My husband announced his plan to go solo with his business. I’ve been using the pressure cooker a lot for dinner. The house is a little messier than before. I haven’t watched LOST since the internship started and I don’t spend much time on Facebook.

Unfortunately my time with dh has slipped and so have my quiet times. These are big rocks and I do need to make time for them. How do you  find the balance? I’d love for the other interns to comment!

More Favorite Kitchen Gadgets

A continuation of yesterday’s post about my favorite kitchen gadgets!

Kitchen Aid Mixer - Our traditional, 5 quart capacity Kitchen Aid has stood the test of time for at least 17 years. I’ve kneaded bread, made cookies and cakes, beat egg whites and made whipped cream in a flash.

If and when the times comes when I can get a new one, this is the one I’d get. The 6 quart, extra large bowl is great for double batches of cookies and baking bread. It has ten speeds and comes with wire whip, burnished flat beater, spiral dough beater and pouring shield.

Grain Mill - When I first heard about modern day women grinding their own wheat, my initial thought was that they must be a bit crazy. Then I discovered the wonderful taste and health benefits of grinding my own wheat for use in breads and baked goods. Modern grain mills can get the grinding job done in seconds.

Whole wheat bread is currently around $3.00 a loaf. If you commit to baking your family’s bread you will easily recoup the cost of the mill during your first year. Where can you get wheat? Check out Bread Beckers or Wheat Montana for a local co-op near you.

Thankful Thursday

ttbuttonIn every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

When the stresses of life get overwhelming the best thing to do is draw away from the busyness and chaos, think about what’s good in your life and give thanks!

What am I grateful for today? A husband who works hard and daily lays down his life for his family. The progress I see in my kid’s academics in spite of the challenges. Food in our pantry. A roof over our heads. Life is good!
