We recently hosted a family reunion this year where the family members haven’t gotten together for almost 20 years. There were over 120 family members that attended.
I was trying to figure out a way to document the families’ genealogy. Some families used Family Tree Maker or some other genealogy software on their computer but it was hard to combine all of that information together. Searching on the internet, I found an open source (free) genealogy software called PhpGedView which allows you to view and edit your genealogy on your website. It also simplifies the process of collaborating with others working on your family lines. Your latest information is always on your website and available for others to see.
Here are some of the features of PhpGedView:
- Full editing capabilities, full privacy functions, and supports multimedia like photos and document images
- Powerful searching features let you find the people you are looking for
- Pedigree, Descendancy, and Timeline charts just like in your regular genealogy program
- With customizable theme templates, your site will look the way you want it to
- Share your genealogy with your family, friends, and the world over the Internet
- Edit your genealogy online
- Allow your family members to login and view and/or edit genealogy online
- Collaborate better with your family members by working together on the same data set
- It is compliant with GEDCOM 5.5 (GEnealogical Data COMmunication)
- You don’t have to generate thousands of extra html files. Simply upload your GEDCOM file and you’ve updated your entire site.
The best part about this software is it’s FREE! I am thinking about having our family members use this.
What do you think? Have any of you used this software before?

Very cool Mimi. I have always wanted to get more involved with studying family genealogy but it will have to go on the “to do” list for now.

WOW, I had NO idea! I was really into researching our family tree for about a year and a half but my $29.95/mo membership w/ Ancestry.com was getting too much so I had to quit. I will definitely try this open source program out. Thanks to you!
