The dress may be the most important part of the prom but it is not the only thing. That dress might as well be hanging on a mannequin if you don’t know how to accessorize. Learn how to make that dress stand out on prom night.

Once you have chosen your dress, you will need to think about a handbag. You won’t need much, so make sure that the handbag is small and not overloaded. If your dress is jeweled, choose a handbag that is also jeweled. It does not have to be the same color as the dress, but should complement it well.

Every young girl needs jewelry to finish a formal look. If the hair is to be worn up off of the neck, take the opportunity to wear longer earrings. Girls wearing shorter hairstyles can also sport long earrings. If there are beads or rhinestones on the dress, try to use the same type of jewel in the accessories.

High or sheer necklines do not require a necklace. The addition would take away from the beauty of the dress. Those wearing strapless gowns or plunging necklines should go wild. If you are into retro, the bigger the necklace, the bolder it will be.

Most prom dresses have no sleeves or quarter length ones. This leaves room for bracelets or bangles. Depending on your style, an armful of bracelets may be right up your alley. A gold or silver tennis bracelet with diamond accents would add a sparkle to most gowns.

What type of shoes would go with the outfit? Should they be high heels or wedges? Should they be closed-toed or open? There are many choices and all are acceptable. If you are petite, higher heels will give the illusion of a longer torso. Low heels will keep a taller girl from reaching the rafters.

If you opt for open-toed shoes, get a pedicure. A manicure is necessary and so is a pedicure if you want to show off those toes. A classic French manicure is simple yet elegant on fingernails and toenails.

Make your hair appointment two weeks in advance of the prom. Have your style picked out to give to the stylist. If you don’t want to fool with your own makeup, visit a makeup counter in the mall. Be sure to tell the technician what color your dress will be so that her choice of makeup will complement it.

In order for the prom dress to be its best, you must accessorize. Accessories can be expensive, but they will seem well worth the price when you see the prom pictures. Besides, most of the accessories can be worn again with other outfits in the future.
