How To Get Your Kids To Enjoy Raw Foods

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-mNsz5gZ3o

Many American families tend to lead over scheduled and frantic lives. This leads to a diet heavy in red meat, sugar, fat, refined grains, frequently in the form of fast food, also known as the Standard American diet (SAD). According to national surveys, less than 5% of people on a “healthy diet” eat sufficient quantities of green leafy vegetables (greens).

But with health issues like diabetes, asthma, high cholesterol and obesity on the uptick, more people are examining their eating habits and seeing that they need to return to raw foods to achieve optimum health for their families. For instance, spinach is one of nature’s superfoods. It contains fiber, vitamin C, vitamin E, calcium, folic acid and the antioxidant lutein.

Your kids won’t eat their spinach? Try them in smoothies! Blended with bananas and other fruits, greens like spinach and kale can become a yummy snack that can help your child get the 3 to 5 servings of greens that they need to stay healthy.

If you’d like to try green smoothies for your family, check out the Green Smoothie Recipes for Kids book. It has dozens of delicious green smoothie recipes. We’ve been making green smoothies for a few weeks around here and they have been a hit with my kids.

Another way to get your kids to eat more healthfully is by incorporating raw snacks into their diets. The easiest way, of course is just by eating some fresh fruit. But kids want the fun stuff! Did you know you could make your own fruit leathers with fresh fruit in a food dehydrator? A great resource for raw snack ideas for your kids is Raw Kids Recipes.

Many families who try to incorporate healthier eating habits into their lives soon notice the positive difference in the health of their families.

Buzz-A-Mom: Crissy Herron of Indie Biz Chicks

buzz-a-mom1I really love getting to know more about successful women online entrepreneurs. This week I got to interview Crissy Herron, owner and founder of Indie Biz Chicks, which offers “business, marketing, and publicity info for women who’d rather work for themselves, than work for the man.”

Can you tell us about your background and family?

I’m a Michigan girl, born and raised. I moved to Alaska in my early 20s but am now back in Michigan. I learned a lot while I was there, and I miss it, but I’m also glad to be back home in the Midwest. [Read more...]

7 Traveling Mom Love Links

The Sun Sets on Château de ChillonThis week, in honor of Spring Break and great travel plans,  I looked at mom blogs that discuss traveling or living overseas.  When I was 9,  we moved overseas, then back to the U.S., then lived in several different states, before making one more move overseas again.  The planet is so big,  let’s all go explore it!

This mom is planning five trips abroad with families to help them study Ancient Rome.  She includes a link to Google Earth’s Ancient Rome maps, which is fascinating reading on its own.  I volunteer to go on one of the trips!

An Irish blogger who lives in Seattle and travels with two kids in tow to fabulous places.  In this post, she recommends renting a vacation rental property in Mexico (or in other exotic locations) as a family-friendly alternative to hotels.  She also has 23 blog posts related to Europe.

Mom traveling with a 4, 9, and 12 year old and a husband.    Yes, they were jetlagged and got the flu, but they also have great photos of Provence, old castles, arched bridges,  Avignon,  and ancient ruins.  And some worthy travel advice for families.

An American mom now living in Spain with her husband and three bilingual sons.  Spain?!!  I love Spain.  I want to go to Barcelona.

An American mom married to a German, mother of three, and homeschooling the kids in two different languages.  Can you imagine trying to homeschool in two different languages?

A Canadian mom married to a German, with two bilingual teens, on her way to Denmark.

A New Zealander married to a Belgian, who is an exquisite photographer.  Just check  out her photos.  She has magnificent photographs and a caring concern for the world.  I volunteer to carry her photo equipment around on the next world foray.

Saved $30 on Groceries Using MTN Tips

If you use the tips that my fellow mom interns have been sharing on this site over the past several weeks, you can definitely reduce your costs at the grocery store.  I saved $30 shopping for groceries today!   I’m not a coupon person, per se,  but did take the time to browse through this week’s coupons and grocery store flyer to see what was on sale.  (Well, I made my husband do it, because he likes coupons more than I do.)  We planned our menu around what was on sale.

Then I took Penny Pinching Diva’s advice given in last week’s Buzz a Mom edition, and stocked up on sale items.   We now have a well stocked pantry and our coupons gave us $30 worth of savings!   And we racked up $1.00 off per gallon of gas at our next fill up too.

Thanks to all the interns who have posted such great tips on cutting costs over the past few weeks.  Ahem.  They really do work.
