When There’s No Time To Prepare: Tips For Speaking Off the Cuff

It’s inevitable: You’re at a luncheon to honor a colleague and someone asks you to “say a few words.” Or your boss tosses an assignment into your lap that requires a presentation to your team with a turnaround time of one hour.

These can be the most nerve-wracking of presentations; after all, we’re taught that thorough preparation is the foundation of a successful presentation. When there’s no time to prepare, a key building block of your talk is missing.

No need to sweat; you can do it! Just follow the tips below for an off-the-cuff speech that makes you sound like the clever, articulate, unruffled genius you are.

Pointer 1: Stall for time!

If you’re asked to speak at an event where there will be several speakers, see if you can put off your time slot for a few minutes. Even five minutes will give you the time you need to do some speedy homework.

Pointer 2: Write out some quick notes.

Take a moment to think about your audience, the purpose of the occasion, and what you want to convey. Make some quick bullet points (on a napkin, if necessary), but no more than three so you don’t overwhelm yourself or the audience.

Because no one is expecting a long dissertation, don’t feel pressured to say more than is necessary.

Take your notes with you when it’s your turn to speak; because you only have a couple of bullet points, you won’t be tempted to stare at the paper the whole time you’re speaking, neglecting to make eye contact with your audience.

Write out your first sentence and memorize it, so that you can start off your remarks with an air of confidence. And make an effort to fit in an eloquent closing.

Remember, it’s about the audience, not you. If you’re saying a few words about a colleague, say something personal, but don’t bring up negative or embarrassing stories. Share positive memories, but most importantly, speak sincerely and from the heart. Give the audience what they want, and you will find your anxiety melting away.

Pointer 3: Get it together.

If you can get away, go to the restroom or another room for some privacy. Breathe deeply and do some neck rolls and stretches to get the blood flowing. Clench and unclench your hands and feet a few times if you’re sitting at a table and your hands and feet are hidden.

This is where visualization and positive self-talk can be useful. You’ve been asked to speak because someone believes you have something important to say. Remember this as you’re doing relaxation exercises and tell yourself that this is an opportunity, not a punishment.

Pointer 4: Be yourself, whatever that means.

If you are generally an informal speaker, don’t try to be formal just because the occasion is formal. Likewise, if you are a more reserved and formal speaker, don’t attempt a laid-back style. As a last-minute speaker, the last thing you should be doing is trying on a new persona in front of the audience. Do what you do best, and don’t try to be someone you’re not.

Ideally, you will always anticipate being asked to speak in certain situations, and won’t be caught off guard. Plan ahead if you think it’s possible that you will be asked to speak; have a few remarks in mind, just in case.

Last of all: Don’t panic. With a few moments to pull yourself together and make some pertinent notes, your last-minute speech can be genuine, natural, succinct, and meaningful, as though you had plenty of time to prepare.

Lose 10 Postpartum Pounds in 5 Weeks

You’ve seen the teaser ads, “Lose 50 pounds in 5 days!” Some diets claim you can lose a ridiculous amount of weight in a short period of time. But the truth is if you want to sustain weight loss, the “slowly but surely” approach works best. If you gradually shed your pounds while practicing good eating and exercise habits, you will lose the weight for life and get off the diet roller coaster once and for all.

After having a baby, the extra pounds can seem almost impossible to shed with the demands of caring for a little one. So I recommend you set a doable goal like losing 2 pounds a week. In just 5 weeks, you’ll be 10 pounds lighter and well on your way to your pre-pregnancy weight. Losing 2 pounds a week takes discipline but it can be done by following these simple guidelines.

1. Do the math. To lose one pound, you need a 3,500 calorie deficit per week. So to lose 2 pounds a week, you need to cut 7,000 calories, or 1,000 calories a day. This can be done by shaving off 500 calories from your food intake (skip that cookie snack and café mocha) and by exercising. Switching between cardio and strength training on different days, or combining the two, will help you burn 500 calories a day.

2. Put your weight loss goals in your calendar. Start your five week push on a Monday and weigh in. Let’s say you’re 150 pounds. Put the goal weight of 148 in your calendar for the following Monday and so on. Check it off on your calendar as you meet your weekly goals and plan something special for the end of the 5 weeks when you’re 10 pounds lighter.

3. Practice the essentials. There’s really no quick fix or trick to losing weight. Fitness legend Jack La Lanne says it best, “Exercise is king, diet is queen, put them together and you’ve got a kingdom.” Eat healthy and exercise every day and the weight will come off.

Today’s Action Step: Are you ready to lose 10 pounds in 5 weeks? Put your weight loss goals in the calendar, buy healthy food for your refrigerator and pantry, and start exercising today!

Acne and Its Causes

When you think of acne, most people tend to link it to adolescence. However, what you may not realize is that many adults also suffer from the condition and it can cause a lot of shame and embarrassment.

There are a number of theories on why people suffer from acne, but what are the true causes – and can it actually be prevented?

Understanding Acne

Acne is a term used to describe the presence of reddish spots on the skin. It can be unpleasant to look at and it can cause a lot of embarrassment to those who suffer from the condition.

Scientifically it is initiated by blocked hair follicles. It is thought that the follicles become blocked after abnormal flaking of the cells occurs. The blocked follicle then enlarges and ruptures, which causes oil to leak out into the skin. This causes a swelling and inflammation occurs which is what gives the spots their red color.

The true cause of acne is not actually known. However there are many theories as to what could contribute to the condition.

Hormones, Stress and Bacteria

The most commonly accepted theory is that acne is caused by hormones. This is especially the case in adolescents where acne flares up and then disappears as the person ages. More specifically it is the hormones known as androgens that are thought to be to blame and they are what cause the sebaceous glands to over-stimulate and produce more oil. These hormones are also thought to be to blame for women who develop acne during their period. It is the extra oil produced by the sebaceous glands that mixes with dead skin cells and bacteria and which blocks the pores, causing acne.

Another prevalent theory is that stress can play a big part in acne. This is because when we are stressed, our bodies produce certain hormones like cortisol – which is well known to aggravate acne. So whilst stress is not thought to directly cause acne, it can actually make the condition worse.

Bacteria may also influence the appearance of acne on one’s skin. More specifically, it is the bacteria known as “Propionibacterium acne” that is thought to be the problem. This is because they produce a certain substance which can cause redness as well as irritation to the skin. The enzymes which they create can also cause irritation because they dissolve the sebum.

Although nobody knows the true cause of acne, the above mentioned are just three factors which are thought to contribute to the problem.

Two Common Acne Myths

One thing which many people believe when it comes to the cause of acne is that it is caused by a lack of hygiene. Dirt and cleanliness have been linked many times to the condition, but in fact they have nothing to do with causing acne. If you look at it logically, it is easy to see why people would assume that acne is caused by dirt. After all the condition occurs when the pores are blocked and so if you have dirt build up on the skin, it could block the pores. However, it will not cause acne.

Another common myth is that you can catch acne. It is in no way contagious, though obviously with any spots on the skin it is not advisable to pick them or touch other areas of the skin after you have touched the acne. This is just common sense and it is general hygiene which you should follow.

Hopefully you now have a better understanding of the causes of acne and the truth behind some of the myths.

Handle Your Frustrations and Move Ahead Quicker

“I feel so frustrated!” As a human being, chances are you’ve said this many times, either out loud or in your mind. The great thing about accepting you’re frustrated is that you’ve identified and acknowledged what’s going on. It’s too easy to carry on struggling with something and being unaware that it’s causing you frustration. Once you’ve realised that you’re frustrated, you’re free to make choices about how you handle it. The way you handle your frustrations is a key to successfully moving on.

One of the first choices you need to make is to shift away from being a victim and from saying “Why me?” or “Why did this have to happen?” Being a victim wastes your time and energy and often leaves you feeling even more frustrated. Instead, make the shift to tapping into your own resourcefulness and discover solutions. Part of the reason we often stay stuck and frustrated is that we don’t believe we can do something about it. You are more resourceful than you think.

The first step is to identify specifically what you’re feeling frustrated about. It may seem obvious but often when we feel frustration, we start to pile other unrelated things on top of it and this clouds the issue. Specifically naming your frustration is half the battle.

Once you’ve identified this specifically, then be an observer of yourself. This isn’t an opportunity to beat yourself up. It’s an opportunity to observe what’s going on without judgement, leaving you able to make effective choices. As an observer, you’ll often see a different perspective. As you’re observing yourself, see what you most need, what’s truly important to you and what it will take to move forward quickly. Observe the chatter that’s going on in your mind. Is your mind chatter keeping you stuck? What is worth listening to?

One of the best ways to be an observer and to see the situation more clearly is to take a break. Once you’ve stepped back from the frustration, you’ll find it easier to tap into your creativeness and come up with ideas and solutions. Tap into the creative and resourceful part of yourself by asking empowering questions. Empowering questions such as “What is important to me about this?”, “What is the intended result?”, “What choices are available to me?”, or “What is the next action I need to take?” When you’re asking these questions, listen carefully for your own response. This is where your own personal resourcefulness will show up and give you the answers and solutions to enable you to move forward. You’ll quickly move beyond the frustration and get back to achieving what you want.

When frustrations have occurred, it’s well worth getting to the source so that you can handle it once and for all. What often leaves us frustrated is when the same problems come up time and time again. Get to the source of your frustration and from that, learn what needs to change or needs to be done differently in the future. Frustrations can also present an opportunity, although it may not feel like it at the time. They’re an opportunity for growth and improvement. Next time you feel frustrated, I invite you to see it as an opportunity.

Summer Travel Advice

The lazy days of summer are here now that Memorial Day has signaled the start of the season. This means you have months to plan exciting getaways and trips out of the country until Labor Day. Whether a water park, spa excursion or a camping trip is your forte, there are necessary steps to take in planning the perfect summer vacation.

Think about the following:

• Plan ahead: There are plenty of online travel deals to be found, but the earlier you search, the cheaper your trip will cost.

• Book seasonally: For example, booking a trip to Disney may offer you lower rates because it’s their busiest season, but consider the crowds you’re sure to face.

• Get “off-hours” flights. If you wake up at 5 a.m. instead of arriving at the airport at noon, you’re sure to get lower airfares and have less wait time in security.

• Consider taking a road trip with friends. Gas prices are skyrocketing and we all feel the burden, so why not rent an RV with friends and chip in on gas charges?

• Check out local attractions. Live near Busch Gardens? Spend a day at the park and book a quaint bed and breakfast nearby for the night. It’ll feel like you went far away.

• Check out airport restrictions. We cannot stress how much time you’ll save in security if you know what you can and cannot bring with you into the cabin.

• Check out last-minute online travel deals. For example, lots of cruise lines offer last-minute-rates for ships about to set sail. You may find yourself hopping on a ship tomorrow for half the original expense!

Book a Trip Online:

If you’re seeking a three-week-long escape to the Greek isles or you just want to go mountain climbing in the Rockies, a must-do is to check out online travel agencies. Some sites offer the best discount travel online and 6StarReviews.com cites Orbitz as a great place to start. Among their features are low-fare promises, constant updates and 24/7 customer support. Summertime equates to a good time and if you plan early and efficiently, you’re sure to enjoy the season.
