Stay-At-Home Moms: The Art Of Maintaining A Social Life

One of the hardest and most rewarding jobs is that of a mother. Women who choose to stay at home to raise their children form a special bond with their children. At the same time, they lose some of the social skills needed to maintain a social life outside of the family.

When we become adults, most of the friends we have are a result of our daily interactions. In the workplace, we get to know our coworkers and share lunches, dinners, and the occasional weekend outing. Through civic groups and church we meet others who share similar interests.

When you are living life as a stay-at-home mom, your position doesn’t leave much time to interact socially. Besides the kids, there is housework, errands, and doctor appointments. All of these duties leave little time for the social interaction that an adult craves.

For the stay-at-home mom, creating and maintaining a social life takes concentrated effort. Because the natural opportunities are not there in which to meet and get to know others, you must make your own encounters. Let your children help you in this regard.

Getting your kids involved in Mommy and Me classes or play groups draws all of you out of the house. While the kids play, mothers can get to know each other. Exchange phone numbers and invite one another over for a little “girl talk” during nap time.

Talk to your spouse. If he will consent to be responsible for the children one day out of the weekend, this frees you up to pursue hobbies of interest. Joining a club offers more opportunities to meet new friends.

Organize a get-together. The women from the play group and their families can join in with your family and have a cookout at the local park. The kids get to see one another outside of their normal time and the adults in the group get to meet and greet. All of you can discuss child rearing, social issues, or whatever strikes your fancy.

Join an online mommy forum. It’s hard to be home all day and not see another adult until your spouse comes home from work. Online stay-at-home mom or women’s groups have forums where moms can discuss issues and offer encouragement to each other. The forums are a good way to work on social skills and meet other mothers from across the country and the world.

Being a stay-at-home mom is good for the kids but rough on your social life. Moms need the company of other women to share their joys and sorrows. Staying connected to the world outside your door takes effort and motivation.

Family Trips: How To Find And Reserve Campsites Across North America

Camping is a fun activity for the entire family. Campgrounds are located all across the United States and Canada. For your next family trip find and reserve a campsite no matter what your destination.

There are several online websites that offer reservation and locater services for individuals and families looking to camp out during their next vacation. These websites list basic campgrounds, campground parks, and RV campgrounds and parks. Where you are looking to camp and what time of the year will determine how hard it will be to get a reservation.

ReserveAmerica provides reservations for campsites all over North America. They are the largest service provider for campers in North America. The company provides management solutions for the camping and outdoor recreation industry. They connect with campgrounds and national and state parks all across the continent to bring them more notice and business during the camping seasons.

Because ReserveAmerica has so many camping sites using their technology, you have a greater chance of finding and reserving the perfect spot for you and your family. They manage over 3,000 parks and 150,000 campsites. If you need it, they can find it.

KOA Kampgrounds offers full service camping to campers all across North America. KOA (Kampgrounds of America) provides services for both family campers and RV campers. KOAs can always be found by the yellow sign with the teepee on it.

Full service campgrounds are popular sites for families with small children and those who want the outdoor experience without having to sleep in a tent. Here the camping experience becomes “roughing it” with style. Full service camping sites offer clean restrooms and bathing facilities, washers and dryers, camping stores, pet areas, and tent sites that are convenient to all of the amenities.

KOA also offers cabins and lodge facilities for large families and groups. They offer one and two room cabin styles. The one room cabin can sleep four people comfortably while the two room cabin can sleep six. Some cabins come with heat and air conditioning. For the cabins, campers will need cooking equipment, bed linens, and personal items.

For larger groups, lodges offer kitchen facilities and heat and air conditioning. The lodge sleeps six and has bathroom facilities. Most KOA campsites offer swimming, miniature golf, arcades, and other activities that your kids will love. Some even have wireless Internet access available. Reservations can be conveniently made online several months in advance of your trip to guarantee availability.

Camping is a fun activity. Online campground directories, such as ReserveAmerica and KOA, offer locator and reservation services to assist even the most finicky campers.

Childhood Obesity: How To Help A Child Who Is Overeating

Obesity has become a health epidemic in this country. Children are the fastest growing section of the population suffering from this condition. Follow a few tips to help your child if he or she is becoming obese due to overeating. We can help kids eat healthier.

There are fast food restaurants on every corner. Schools offer several meal choices-some loaded with fat and calories. The chance to overeat is all around your child on a daily basis.

Before you know it, your child will have put on extra weight. Once on, the challenge begins. What can you do to help?

A contributor to obesity is lack of exercise. The television and the video game console keep children occupied but provide no cardiovascular benefit. Sitting on a couch encourages unconscious eating. When your mind is engaged in other activities you don’t keep count on the number of chips you are eating out of that bag.

Some children overeat because of school and social pressures. The pressure to perform at a high academic level leaves children feeling like failures when they miss the mark. In order to cope, they turn to activities that give them the satisfaction that they could not achieve academically. The more they eat, the better they feel.

Pressures to fit in can lead to depression and overeating. Children who are shy and have trouble making friends look to incorporate things into their lives that will not reject them. Food is one of those things. A donut or a hamburger won’t tell you that they hate your clothes or your hair. Food becomes a hiding place that is safe from the outside world.

Parents can head off overeating by discovering the source of the problem. Talking with your child on a regular basis can clue you in on what is happening in his or her life. Don’t press your child, but let him or her come to you.

Exercising can be a family affair. After dinner during the week and anytime on the weekends, exercising with your child gives both of you a cardiovascular workout. Walking and bicycling are two activities that kids like doing.

Stocking your pantry with good low calorie foods encourages healthy choices instead of bad ones. Avoid closet eating by eliminating all fatty and high calorie snacks from the house. When stress gets high, children will go looking for these “bad” snacks and hide the evidence that they are eating them. This will undermine all of your other efforts.

Obesity is a condition that requires treatment not condemnation. Your child may already have to deal with teasing from classmates about his or her weight. If you have negative comments also, he or she will pull deeper into a shell and continue to overeat.

Teaching Your Tween To Avoid Gossip And Teasing

Being an “almost” teenager is a difficult state of being. Their social life is beginning to develop and they are defining who they are. During this time, encourage them to choose their friends wisely.

Peer pressure is a reality for your tween. As kids struggle to figure out who they really are, they will always encounter someone who feels that they should follow their lead. Where they are leading your tween may not be a good place.

Kids speak their minds without reserve. Often, the result can be injury to another child’s self-esteem. As long as they are not affected by their own comments, they are unsympathetic.

Breaking this type of thought process is the key to helping your tween avoid the trap of gossiping and teasing others. Explaining to your tween that teasing is hurtful is a start. The reason behind teasing is important. Most people tease others because of jealousy, envy, peer pressure, or meanness. In an effort to feel better about your jealousy, you make fun of the item that another has that you want.

Some kids tease or gossip about others because they don’t want to be the topic of the conversation. It is a pre-emptive strike. Choosing friends that engage in this type of activity carries the threat that someday your child will be the victim.

How should your tweens handle these situations? Teaching them to choose friends with care will help. A friend will not join in when others tease your child. A good friend will also tell your child if they are getting involved in these destructive behaviors. Friends keep each other accountable.

Keep the lines of communication open in your home. Tweens may have questions about how to handle a situation in their social life. They may also want to confess that they were not so nice to someone and seek advice on making amends.

Condemning children for mistakes in judgment is never helpful. They already feel bad enough about what they have done. Reassure them that you will do what you can to help them.

Preparing your tween for the possibility that they will not be forgiven by the person they hurt is prudent. Because we want things to work out fine does not guarantee that they will. As long as your child has done their part to repair the relationship, this is all they can do. Chalk it up to a lesson learned.

Teasing and gossiping is no fun for the victim. It is also no fun if your tween is being pressured to do it. Make use of every opportunity to encourage your child to stand up for him or herself and refuse to hurt another.

Using An IUD: What Are The Side Effects?

Several types of contraception exist on the market today to prevent unwanted births. Before choosing one, it is helpful to investigate the choices available. A popular form of birth control is the IUD.

IUD stands for “intrauterine device“. It is a form of birth control that is totally implantable. An IUD resembles a capital letter “T” in its design. Essentially, it is made of plastic and contains either copper or hormones.

The purpose of the IUD is to stop an egg from becoming fertilized and implanting itself into the lining of the uterus. How does this occur? The method is not clear but it is speculated that the natural movement of both the egg and the sperm are altered in some way that prevents fertilization.

A woman using an IUD will still ovulate. Other forms of contraception, in particular, The Pill, are designed to keep a woman from ovulating. There are two forms of IUD’s available in the United States: ParaGard Copper T and Mirena.

The ParaGard Copper T is an IUD that contains a copper wire. This IUD can be worn for twelve years and the benefits of the device begin immediately after it is inserted. It has been shown that when the ParaGard is inserted within five days after unprotected sex, it is effective in preventing fertilization.

The Mirena is an IUD that contains hormones. This IUD can be worn for five years and it is effective immediately as a birth control device as well. The continuous release of hormones prevents fertilization from occurring.

An IUD can be inserted into the body in the gynecologist office. Proper placement of the device ensures a 99% success rate. Discussing the IUD option with your doctor will determine if it is the right course of action for you.

There are certain medical conditions that are not conducive to IUD use. A tilted uterus or a uterus that has never been pregnant could pose problems with device placement. Women who have experienced PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) may not be candidates for this form of birth control.

There are side effects with the use of IUD’s. The copper contained in the ParaGard increases the production of hormones that support pregnancy. Women who have used this IUD have reported that their menstrual cycle has increased significantly and, in some cases, their cramps have worsened.

Women using the Mirena have experienced menstrual flow changes as well. Because of the continuous release of hormones, menstrual flow is lighter and sometimes non-existent. The side effects are almost the same as those for The Pill.

The IUD is the most widely used form of birth control. There are no pills to take and effectiveness is immediate.
