Walking: The Perfect Exercise For Older Women

Welcome Moms! Please register as a user and feel free to submit your posts and comments often! We are link friendly and super excited about what you have to say!

It’s been said that one of the best exercises is walking. This is especially true for women as they get older. If you’ve considered taking up walking, come take a look at these benefits and tips.

One of the things people enjoy is being able to take walks in the park on a Saturday or Sunday morning; take in the fresh air, and enjoy nature. One of the fundamentals in maintaining an exercise program is walking. For older women who want to age gracefully, walking is the perfect exercise.

Let’s face it; as we get older, we all need to keep moving. Not just getting up and walking around the house; but going outside and walking to the local store, or for the pure enjoyment of it. I love getting up early in the morning and taking a walk in the neighborhood. It clears my head, and I feel rejuvenated. Moreover, if I am feeling stressed or worried about a particular problem; walking in the open air seems to alleviate the problems and I feel wonderful afterwards. I return home with a fresh perspective and look forward to the day’s events.

As baby boomers, we will need to engage in more exercise as we get older. It is important not only for our overall health, but keeps us limber; aids in strengthening our bones; and keeps our cardiovascular system strong. Whether we walk 20 minutes a day or an hour; as long as we keep those legs moving, we are helping to prevent and keep at bay any future joint problems. While some of us may have the onset of arthritis or osteoporosis, walking acts as a deterrent from the disease progressing.

For some, walking may be an exercise they have been doing for years. For others, it may be a necessary action. Sometimes, you may not be in the mood! Well, get out your favorite CD and walk to the beat. Go to your local park and walk around the track. Start out slowly, and eventually you will be clocking in at a mile or more. It’s invigorating!

If you are like me and really dislike gyms and working out, walking is the best and most natural way to exercise. Give it a try!

Cleaning Patio And Lawn Furniture: Get Ready For Summer Use

May 30, 2007 by Kelly · Leave a Comment

Soon you will be preparing your patio and lawn furniture for the summer. Can’t wait, right? Well here are some tips for cleaning your patio/lawn furniture.

While there are several methods you can use to clean your patio and lawn furniture, undoubtedly you do not want to use any harsh chemicals or environmentally unsafe cleaners. Therefore, you can use items that are safe and which you already have in your home: baking soda; vinegar, and bleach.

  • To clean the patio, it is recommended that you use a pressure washer to remove all the algae, and then follow up with a diluted bleach wash.
  •  Use bleach and detergent to wipe down all of the furniture and let it stand for one hour. Use the hose to rinse and let dry.
  • Use baking soda if there are areas on your furniture which need more cleaning. Add water; rinse and dry.
  • Add baking soda to a wet sponge; clean and rinse.
  • Use vinegar for your wooden decks and patio furniture. Vinegar is the least abrasive, and easy to use. It not only removes mildew on wood furniture, but on plastic furniture as well. For the tough to get at areas, use a small brush; then rinse and let the furniture dry. If you have lawn cushions, the best method you can use to clean them would be plain old liquid detergent and a sponge. Use the same substance to clean the umbrella table as well.

Ah, now you can sit back and enjoy the warmth of the sun; sip a glass of lemonade as you listen to the birds returning to the birdhouse you built for them last summer! You can have your morning cups of coffee out on the deck as the sun rises; and return to watch it go down at night with a delicious cocktail! Ah, summer!

Even Hungry Caterpillars can Teach Lessons

May 30, 2007 by Kelly · Leave a Comment

Oversized dog, hungry caterpillar and talking bears; what do they have in common? They are all great characters that will entertain your toddler for many days to come. Here is an article that introduces you to five outstanding books for toddlers.

Five Best Ever Children’s Books for Toddlers

Start your children off early with their love of reading. Read to them whenever you get a chance so they can learn about books and how special they are. Once they begin to read, they will return the favor by reading to you. Here are my picks for the five best ever children’s books for toddlers.

1. Clifford the Big Red Dog by Norman Bridwell - When Emily Elizabeth gets her very own puppy, neither she nor her family have any idea of how he will change their lives. She names him Clifford. Clifford is a special dog as Emily Elizabeth soon finds out. Clifford grows up and up and up until he’s too big for their apartment. That’s when Emily and her family move to Birdwell Island so Clifford can have some room to play. Through Clifford’s adventures, children learn the values of sharing, apologizing, making friends, and helping out.

2. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle - All of Eric Carle’s stories feature loveable creatures from nature in bold colors and shapes. As soon as you see a cover, you know that it is one of his books. The first one that I ever read was about the caterpillar. It seemed that caterpillar was never satisfied and always hungry. Why was he so hungry? Then one day, he disappeared inside something called a cocoon. What happened to caterpillar next will surprise and amaze your toddler. Carle’s books teach practical lessons about nature and how animals function in it. Children will learn about the animals and their native habitats.

3. The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein - This book is one that your toddler will ask you to read over and over again. The Giving Tree is a touching book about life and love as told through a young child’s relationship with a tree. Sometimes, though we forget what our parents and friends have done for us. It hurts them when we turn out backs on them, but they always welcome us back with open arms. Parents will like this story because it mirrors a parent’s bittersweet love and sacrifice for a child.

4. Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne - Who hasn’t heard of Winnie the Pooh? Pooh belongs to Christopher Robin, a young boy who joins him on many adventures. Winnie the Pooh lives in the Hundred Acre Wood in a tree house surrounded by his friendly neighbors. Your toddler will meet Tigger, the orange and black tiger that bounces around on his tail. They’ll also meet Kanga and Roo, the mother and son duo who live near Pooh. There is Rabbit who tries to keep order in the community and seems to be the only responsible party besides Kanga. Pooh’s favorite fearful friend is Piglet, who runs to Pooh when he’s in trouble. I don’t exactly know what Eeyore is, but the pinned up tail suggests that he is a blue donkey of sorts. He may seem sad, but he comes through for his friends when they need him most. Owl is the wisest of the group, always giving advice to the others on practical matters.

5. Corduroy by Don Freeman - Children love animals especially cute, cuddly teddy bears. Corduroy is a stuffed bear that sits on a shelf in the department store day in and day out waiting for someone to buy him. When a young girl’s mother points out that he has lost a button, Corduroy goes in search of it. As he explores his surroundings, he notices all of the wonderful things that are kept in the store. Does Corduroy ever find his button? Read the book and find out. Corduroy will become one of your toddler’s favorite stories.

When they are not old enough to read, you must do the honors. Any of these books will offer adventurous and heartwarming stories your child will love. If you don’t own any of them, get a copy today.
